Call Me Rae
Part 1 of Chapter 1. Rae Callen is fifteen. She's bright, beautiful, energetic, and hiding a dark secret. Two years ago, Rae was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Not much of a surprise, because her mother suffers from her own mental issues. Rae and her mother have moved to a small town, in order to escape. Rae eventually finds solace in a boy named Andrew Rusher, who knows all too well what schizophrenia's effect is like...
"I have no soul. I am all alone. Why am I here? I don't know. Let me die now. I shall be free. But no. You won't do that, Lord. For you love me..." - RaeLynne Sariah Callen

Why are we here! What's the meaning of this? The voices in my head screamed. They were mad. They didn't want to go to a new school. It took almost every ounce of my being to get into that car. They hated this new town, this new house, this new place. Schizophrenia sucks so bad. My mom drove happily down the road. She blasted the music and tapped the steering wheel. She's like me. Absolutely insane. Mom's got issues. It runs in our family. It's not so bad having Mom around, though when Jana comes a'knockin, run to the hills. Jana's my mom. Well, she's one of my mom's personalities. So far, the doctor's have gotten six counted. There's Jana, who's a b-word {to put it lightly}, there's Lilac, who's a hippie, there's Nickole, who's a teenager, there's Karla, who's my mom's twin sister, there's Simon, who's a British police officer, and then there's my Mom. Simon and Jana are the ones you never want around. They...are...bad! I like have Karla around. My mom took on her personality after her death. Doctors find that very odd, but I understand it. Lilac and Nickole don't hang around much. When there's a party or peace riot, they're gone. Oh look! My new school! I'll be back at lunch.
"Hello! How may I help you?" A secretary in the school's front office said chirpily. "Hi! I'm Karla Frehr, and this is my niece RaeLynne. I've come to register her for school!" "Hold on a moment." The secretary typed in Rae's name into the computer. "What is your full name, dear?" The secretary asked. "RaeLynne Sariah Callen." The secretary looked at her funny. "Um, how do you spell that now?" RaeLynne spelled it out. There was a blip noise that came from the computer. "Ah, her we are. RaeLynne S. Callen. Okay, I'm printing your timetable and a note for your teachers." The printer next to her made a rather annoying "rrrr-inng" noise that made Karla jump as it started up. It spit out two sheets of paper. The secretary grabbed them and handed them to Rae. "There you go RaeLynne. By the way, I'm Mrs. Jourdin. Welcome to Tinley Falls Secondary!" "Thank you!" Rae said, perking up slightly. She wanted to appear normal. "Alright Rae, I have to go to work. I'll pick you up at 2:30." Karla kissed her head. "Bye, aunty." Rae watched her mom leave her.
As she left the front office, she looked at her timetable. Her first class was Latin. Skip, skip, skip! A voice screamed. "No." she firmly stated. She focused on her feet and walked briskly toward a corridor. With every turn, the voice screamed louder. She tried to ignore it. She made it to the Latin room. The door was open. The teacher was at her desk and the kids were chatting. She knocked on the door. The teacher looked up. "Hello, I'm new. My name's Rae Callen." The teacher nodded her head. "Yes, I knew you were coming. Please have a seat." Rae stepped in. A hush came over the class. Several boys gawked at her. Rae looked away nervously. She sat in an empty desk at the back of the room. The teacher stood and walked to the center of the room. "Alright class, today we have a new student. Everyone, say hello to Rae Callen." Every turned and stared at her. Several said hello. Rae tried to be invisible but it was no use. Everyone eventually turned around. Rae felt uncomfortable. The voice of a demon entered her head.
It clacked evilly. "Rae, you useless little piece of s***." It often insulted her. "You're worthless. Oh look, a boy's staring at you." Rae glanced over her shoulder. A boy was. He quickly put his head down. "See, you're attracting too much attention. You're just lucky they can't hear me. Oh look, another boy!" Rae glanced over to her right. A boy was staring at her intensely. She tried to focus on the teacher. She was giving a lecture on Latin history. Rae began to panic. The demon left for a while, being replaced by a young, frightened Southern woman. "Why's he starin' at ya like that? Is it ya hair? Ya face? Oh, I bet its them clothes ya wearin'! I told ya not to wear 'em! I told ya!" Rae clenched her fists. She looked over at the boy.
He was tall and thin. "He looks like a wire!" An older woman's voice commented rudely. Rae turned away, but kept observing him. He had dirty blonde hair that was longer in the front than the back. "His hair looks funny!" the woman laughed." Rae kept looking. He had bright blue eyes and fair skin "How much you want to bet he's never been outside?" "Shut up." Rae mumbled. The teacher looked up from the lesson. "Did you say something, Rae?" Rae was quick to answer. "Just mumbling to myself, ma'am." The teacher look quizzical for a moment then turned back to the board. The older woman's voice kept its personal opinion on the boy who was starring at Rae. Seconds before the bells rang; Rae threw her things into her bag and stood up. The bell rang and Rae darted out the door. It was second period. This meant lunch. Rae shuffled towards the cafeteria, trying desperately to block out the voices that haunted her.
