Calico Cat Names

Recently, I owned this colorful cat which had a very soft velvety fur. Looks wise, she was no different from the other cats around. The only difference between her and the other cats was the unique colored coat she had. While researching for this article I found that she was actually unique, she was a calico cat! But what is a calico cat? Let's find out.

You first need to know that calico is not just another cat breed. The cats which have a specific color pattern are called calico cats. These cats have a coat which is multicolored. Wondering which colors are they? Well, white, black and orange are those colors which are present all over the body of a pure calico cat, in form of large blocks. A version of these cats is called the tortoise shell or tortie cat, which has a blended form of these colors.

One of the most interesting facts about calico cats is that majority of these cats are female! Their genetics are responsible for it as the color of the coat is trait which is sex-linked. The female cats have two 'X' chromosomes and the male has one 'X' and one 'Y' chromosome. The 'X' chromosome is responsible for the black and orange color, in calico cats. The white color is due to another gene. As the female calico cats have two 'X' chromosomes, they have two coat colors; orange and black. The males have only one 'X' chromosome, so they have either orange or black coat.
