Cairn Terrier Mix

The cairn terrier is a working dog that originated in Scottish Highlands. It is commonly used for burrowing prey and in hunting. In the year 1909, the cairn terrier was brought in dog shows in Britain, however, it was introduced as short-haired Skye terrier. The Skye terrier breeders didn't accept this name and the dog was renamed as Cairn Terrier. The thick coat of Cairn Terriers protect them from harsh weather conditions like snow, rain, sleet, etc. Brambles and sharp-edged rocks are also found in the region where these dogs originate. The coat therefore, provides protection from these rocks.

Cairn Terrier Mix Breeds

There are many breeds formed by crossing Cairn Terriers with other breeds. Few of these terrier dog breeds are described below.

Pugairn: The pugairn dogs possess fur of cairns however, it is coarse in texture. This mix breed dog is playful just like pugs and possesses the active nature of a terrier. These dogs are easy to deal with and not temperamental at all. Pugairns puppies weigh around 14 pounds at the age of 10 months. This mix breed dog inherits the big eyes from pugs. The Pugairn is a perfect family dog, as it gets along with children and other pets very well.

Cairn Jack Russell Terrier: The mix breed of Cairn and Jack Russell Terrier is a bit rusty in color however, few of them are also black in color. The Cairn Jack Russell Terrier is a nice and playful dog however, at times becomes hyper. It is an intelligent dog breed and doesn't require much time for training. The Cairn Jack Russell Terrier enjoys different physical activities and likes to run around, jump, cuddle, play with the ball and fetch sticks.

Bushland Terrier: This dog breed is obtained by crossing Scottish Terrier with Cairn Terrier. These dogs are small in size and used as pets. Height of these dogs is around 25 cm and weight ranges between 8.5 and 19 kg. These dogs have a double coat: upper layer is hard and wiry, while the undercoat is soft. Color of the skin coat is wheaten. The Bushland terriers live for as long as 15 years.

Cairnoodle: It is a friendly, happy and playful dog which constantly tries to seek attention of the owner. It is a cross between Poodle and Cairn Terrier. Skin coat of the Cairnoodle is characterized by wavy/curly fur that is short. The Cairnoodle has either a rounded or long face and its eyes are big. Ears are triangular and set wide apart from each other. The dog weighs between 13 and 20 pounds while the height is 10-15 inches. Cairnoodle is basically a house dog. It is comfortable in large apartments, houses with spacious yards and other such cozy places. This dog needs exercise on a regular basis. Jogging or short walks are suitable for these dogs to keep them in a healthy condition.

Carnauzer: This terrier mix dog is a cross between Cairn Terrier and Miniature Schnauzer. It is a friendly dog and seeks attention from the people around. The dog weighs around 22 pounds when fully grown. Head of the Carnauzer is square-shaped and it has big eyes. Legs are short and the hindquarters are strong. Skin coat is light-colored and it is a bit wheatish. The problem of shedding is almost absent in this dog breed. Overall, the Carnauzer is a healthy, playful and good family dog.

Depending on the breeds with which Cairn Terriers are crossed, different features and characteristics are reflected in the resulting breeds. One should choose a dog breed which is suitable for his home and also the one that he/she can deal with easily.
