But You Don't Apologize
Jacob and Cheyenne have been dating for about a year, but since Jacob's brother Jason died in a school shooting, Jacob's life has been tumbling downward. Cheyenne has been trying to be supportive but since her mom kicked her dad out and she's had her own issues.
Jacob -
Jacob threw his phone down onto his second floor bedroom in his parents' house after trying to call his girlfriend Cheyenne for the fifth time since she didn't show up for their date last night. He flung his door open before stomping down the stairs to the kitchen where his parents and little sister were about to leave for church. "Ready to go son?" his dad asked with his normal bitter tone.
"Yeah, I just need to grab my bible," Jacob replied with the same lack of emotion. The two had never gotten along very well so tense moments often occurred in the Crown home. Jacob walked through the kitchen out of the door to the study where bible was kept. Before he walked back through the door to the kitchen he heard his dad yelling at his mom again, "We have to keep up appearances Danyelle! If we don't go to church as a family all of those nosy busy bodies will start spreading rumors about our family." Jacob tuned them out as he went through the kitchen and picked up Lily. "We'll meet you in the car." he sighed and trudged out the door.
As he was buckling lily's seat belt she asked, "Why do mommy and daddy fight so much?" with a sad look filling her eyes. "I don't know, I guess they just don't know how to get along." he replied as he now buckled his own seat belt. All conversation ceased as the two adults climbed into the front seat and started the car. The silence had become a custom since Jacob's older brother Jason had died in a school shooting 2 months ago.
After church, Jacob walked over to his friend Anthony's house. "Hey what are you doing here?" Anthony asked after Jacob knocked on the door for about five minutes. "My house is too awkward. I have to work at 12, is it cool if I chill here until then?" Jacob asked.
"Yeah dude, come on in." Anthony smiled and opened the door for him. "How was that party last night?" Anthony asked as the two settled in the living room. Jacob looked at Anthony like he was crazy before saying, "I didn't go to the party, didn't you know that... Weren't you going?"
"Yeah I ran into Chey and she said she was with you but you were out in the car and you two were going back to your place." Anthony replied honestly. When Jacob didn't reply right away Anthony continued, "Wait! Was she there with somebody else?" he asked shocked.
"What the hell?" Jacob asked out loud. "We were supposed to hang out last night! Are you sure you saw Chey last night?" he asked as he tried to figure out what's going on. "I've got to go, see you tomorrow." he replied suddenly and ran out slamming the front door behind him.
Cheyenne -
Cheyenne woke up and sat up quickly looking around before she noticed the sleeping body next to her. As she got up slowly as to not wake the sleeping person, she searched for her clothes on the floor. She got dressed and slowly started to remember small parts of the night before. She sneaked out the room and looked around realizing she had left the party with Damien last night. "Shit," she mumbled as she realized she'd left her car at the house where the party was last night.
"Damien!" she whispered as she shook him awake, "I need you to drive me to my car." she continued as he slowly realized what was happening. "Oh, yeah, just give me a minute." he replied hazily and looked around for his clothes. Cheyenne left the bedroom and went to the small living room in the apartment. Shortly later, Damien walked out and went straight to the door, holding it open for her. "Thanks," she whispered awkwardly and walked out to his car. Damien drove her back to her car in silence as she sat there wondering what to say, but ended up not saying anything.
"Thanks for last night," Damien smiled with a devilish grin. "Call me some time, we should hang out." Cheyenne got out of his car and stared at him before saying, "alright, I will." she smiled and walked over to her silver chevy Malibu with her long black hair swaying back and forth with each step. "I shouldn't feel guilty," she thought to herself, "Jacob should've been there and I would've left with him."
"Where were you all night?" Cheyenne's mom asked when she walked in at 11:30 a.m. Cheyenne could tell that her mom had also just gotten home so she replied, "I could ask you the same thing." and stomped upstairs. Cheyenne and her mother haven't gotten along since Cheyenne's mom kicked her dad out six months ago.
"Honey, come on! Let's go have breakfast somewhere... Or brunch I guess!" her mom yelled. "Fine! Let me grab my charger she yelled back and started looking around her room for her cell phone charger. She found the cord finally and trudged downstairs, still fighting the hangover she had awoken with. They got in the car and Cheyenne started checking her messages, "Five from Jake? Oh shit, I was supposed to hang with him yesterday," she thought to herself as her mom focused on the road. She knew Jacob would be at work so she decided to just send him a text message that read, "Sorry about last night, something came up... Call me when you get home."
Jacob -
Jacob got off work at 4:30 p.m. to find Cheyenne's text message, so he dialed her number and listened to the dial tone. "Hey did you get off early?" Cheyenne asked. "Um yeah, it was slow so they said I could leave. Plus I have finals to study for." Jacob answered bitterly.
"Yeah, don't we all," she laughed half-heartedly, "ok look, I have to tell you something, but I'd rather say it in person and it's kind of important; I want you to hear it from me. Can you stop by?" Cheyenne asked and walked outside so her mom couldn't hear the conversation.
"Sure, I'm just a few blocks away I'll be there'd in a few minutes." Jacob replied and hung up the phone as he kept walking. He was approaching the street of Cheyenne's house and stopped while he was still out of sight but he could see Cheyenne sitting outside. He took a deep breath before he crossed the street. "So what's up?" he asked as he approached the front steps of the house.
"I cheated on you." Cheyenne blurted out quickly before standing up and stepping toward him, "I know you're probably pissed, but I didn't mean for it to happen, I don't even remember any of last night. I'm sorry." she finished quickly.
"I know." Jacob replied and stepped backwards so he was farther away from her. "I found out this morning, and I've had all day to think about it but I still don't know what to say to you. I respect that you had the courage to tell me, but I have to go." Jacob replied and started walking away.
"Jake wait! Please! Just say something," Cheyenne sobbed and ran after him but stopped when he didn't even turn around. "Jacob," she whispered more to herself, "I need you."
