Causes of Burning Eyelids
Allergy is one of the prominent eyelid swelling causes. It can be allergy against substances such as hair spray, makeup chemicals, nail polish, animals or plants. Secondly, inflammation of eyelids called blepharitis can result in burning eyelids. There are some conditions that trigger the onset of blepharitis. Some of them are eyelid infection, dry eyes, rosacea, scalp dandruff, etc. Thirdly, eye stye can be a reason behind the burning of eyelids. It is described as the inflammation of sebaceous glands present near the base of eyelashes. It is mostly caused by bacteria belonging to Staphylococcus genus.
Fourthly, viral or bacterial infection of the eye, termed as conjunctivitis, is another factor that can lead to burn on eyelids. It is contagious in nature. Allergy, environmental irritants, and usage of contact lenses, eye drops and ointments promote the occurrence of conjunctivitis. Fifthly, for both the upper and lower eyelids burning, the most possible reason is chalazion. It is caused by the blockage of oil glands. There are some factors that are comparatively less likely to cause burning eyelids. These are cellulitis, orbital cellulitis, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, etc.
Home Remedies for Burning Eyelids
- Take a clean, warm washcloth and place it on your eyes for 15 minutes. This will open the blocked oil glands of your eyelids.
- Prepare a mixture of warm water and baking soda. Use it to clean eyelid affected with blepharitis 2-3 times a day.
- Use a non-prescription artificial tear to remove dryness from the eyes. This will give you a soothing effect.
- Wash your eyes with a decoction consisting of dried coriander leaves and water twice a day. This will relieve conjunctivitis.
- Wear a wrap around sun glass or goggle when outside to protect your eyes from wind and sunlight as both of them can increase dryness of eyes.
- Use a humidifier in the room where you spend most of your time. This will assist you in keeping your eyes moisturized.
- Never work continuously for long hours on computer. Take breaks in small intervals to prevent eye dryness and strain.
- Cut short on the consumption of alcohol as it interferes with the natural process of burning eyelid's healing.
- Avoid watching television in a stretch. It causes eye strain and dryness, which further worsens the condition of burning eyelids.
- Follow a healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins to boost your immune system.
