Bullock Preaches Message Opposite Her Romantic Comedy Roles
Despite consistently appearing in successful romantic comedies – and enjoying watching them herself – Sandra Bullock tells young women not to worry about finding a man to "complete" themselves.
Sandra Bullock is something of a romantic comedy aficionado of late, having successfully starred in film "The Proposal" opposite Ryan Reynolds, "All About Steve" with Bradley Cooper and numerous others in the past. Despite her on-screen persona of a woman in love, however, Bullock has urged young women not to be so concerned with finding the perfect guy and instead focus on life. Said Bullock, "I love good romantic comedies, but there’s more to life than just looking for the right guy."
Bullock is married, happily, to Jesse James, the host of "Motorcycle Mania," but she’s made it clear that she is complete all by herself, without a man. Bullock hopes the message actually gets through to "boy obsessed" young women, and noted, "If I can do anything in this time of my career, it’s to make it easier for girls who are growing up not to feel they have to wind up with someone to complete them. You know, I complete me. I’m just lucky that after I completed myself, I met someone who could tolerate me."
While the list of potential suitors who could "tolerate" Bullock is likely quite long, we do get her point. Rather than a Jerry McGuire-esque "you complete me" approach to romance, Bullock is perfectly comfortable thinking of herself in the solo context. She just also happens to have a husband whom she loves. Despite the words of encouragement to young women, Bullock is raking it in by doing romance onscreen. "The Proposal" earned $33.6 million during its opening weekend, which is the biggest opening of any movie Bullock has ever done.
