Building Speaker Boxes - How to Make Speaker Boxes

Great quality and well-built speaker boxes deliver tunes with the best bass and the most brilliant sound. They are easy to make and can be used in cars and also at your home. While making a speaker box, you need to consider the thickness of the material you are going to use. Wood is the most preferred one but it is heavy. Particle board is light in weight and three-quarters of an inch thick. Purchase the particle board or wood according to the size of the speaker box you are going to make. How to Build Speaker Boxes

Method 1:
Materials
Speaker driver, wood / particle board, wood glue, silicone, carpet, fiberglass and screws.

Procedure
Step 1: Choose a speaker driver according to the size of the speaker box you want to make. The speaker box has to be slightly larger than the speaker driver.
Step 2: Particle board or medium density fiberboard are generally preferred for making speaker boxes as sound vibrates well in the wood material of these kinds.
Step 3:Six pieces of wood are required for the top, the bottom, the two sides, the back and the front.
Step 4: Cut a circle for the speaker driver, insert the driver into the front panel and screw in the driver.
Step 5: Drill holes on the board where you want to fit the screws.
Step 6: Attach the sides of the boxes together with the help of a screwdriver. For the boards to be screwed tightly, select screws that do not have threads at the top.
Step 6: Cover the front part of the speaker with a black cloth for hiding the speaker driver and accessories present inside. Glue or staple the speaker cloth on the wood.
Step 7: Drill a hole in the back panel. Through this hole, you can wire the speaker driver to the outside of the speaker box. This will help you to plug the speaker box to the socket-board present on the wall.
Step 8: Even though the sides of the box are screwed together, glue them with adhesive so that they are held together tightly.
Step 9: Add braces or small wedges inside the speaker box so that the sound remains steady and does not vibrate from the sides. These wedges help the sound to move freely inside the box.
Step 10: Stuff the speaker box with silicone to avoid the escape of air.
Step 11: For insulating the speaker box, fill it with poly-fill or fiberglass. This will also improve the quality of sound. The amount required depends on the quality and type of sound you want.

Method 2:
Materials
Fiberboard, jigsaw, power drill, down spiral bit, router, sand paper, razor blade, spray glue, screws, silicone, solder gun, solder and carpet.

Procedure
Step 1: With a template and pencil, trace the dimensions of a speaker box, the six sides, center divider and fiberboard completely. This will design the pattern of the speaker.
Step 2: Use a jigsaw for cutting the patterns traced on the fiberboard. After the tracings are cut, make patterns of where the sub-woofer speaker will be installed. With the frame of the grill of the speaker, trace the outer and inner portions of the frame of the sub-woofer where you are going to place the speakers.
Step 3: Use a router to route the area of fiberboard between the inner and outer holes. The speaker should flush against the board. Create a 2 inch circular hole on each side panel of the speaker box. After routing the holes, use a sand paper to smoothen them.
Step 4: Assemble the speaker box using screws, nuts and washers. Do not assemble the front part of the box. Use silicone at all edges to avoid escape of air.
Step 5: Glue the carpet to the entire box. Spray the glue on the box and at the back of the carpet and stick the carpet on the box.
Step 6: Paste the carpet on the front panel keeping the speaker outside. Cut out a hole using a razor blade for the speaker connectors.
Step 7: Install the speaker connectors and seal them with silicone. Solder the wires of the sub-woofer, speaker, speaker wire and speaker connector. This will ensure that the speaker wire stays connected to the speaker.
Step 8: Attach the front panel to the speaker box and push the speaker into the box. Finally attach the grill.
