Building Raised Flower Beds

In order to build raised flower beds, first decide on the material, which you will be using for the purpose. Though they can be made any using any hard material, landscape timbers, boards and railroad ties are durable options, which can last for many years. You can consult with a horticulturist regarding the building material with respect to the climatic conditions in your area.

The next step is laying out the sites for the raised flower beds. According to the total area, you can decide the number and the size of flower beds. In case, the gardening site is large enough, you can create several raised flower beds and grow specific flower varieties per bed. On the contrary, if gardening land is limited, prepare longer flower beds of raised type and plant different flower species to create a color pattern.

For easy implementation, draw a sketch of the yard including the flower beds and paths in between beds. This way, you will be able to plan symmetrical raised flower beds. Consider the height of the flower beds before purchasing the building materials. A height of 16-18 inch is favorable, as a taller bed increases the chances of tumbling. You can purchase building material as per the suggestions of the horticulturist.

Landscape timber or railroad ties are ideal for small beds, while pressure treated lumber woods are best suited for the larger beds. Another option for raised flower beds is those made up of cedar, which is attractive as well as durable. Though cedar raised flower beds are expensive, they usually last for many years. You can purchase such raised flower bed kits from any horticultural shop. Cut the wood or prepare the building material as per the plan of the raised flower beds.

Once you are ready with the building material of the raised flower beds, you can prepare the soil of the beds. You can spray flour to define the boundaries of the beds. Remove the plants or weeds (if any) from the bed areas. For better aeration and drainage, you can loosen the soil. For securing the building material in the soil, you should dig a trench deep enough to bury a couple of inches of the material.

Build the raised flower bed box by securing the material in the trench. Finally, fill the box with a good quality soil mixed with farmyard compost. You can add more sand and gravel in case of poor drained garden soil. With this step, your raised flower beds are ready for the plantation of flowers and crops. Raised flower beds do not mean that only flowers can be grown, rather vegetables and herbs can also be planted successfully.
