Many readymade trellis are available in the market for one to use; kits are also available for those who would like to try out their hand in making them. However, for those garden lovers, who want to do and make everything from the basics, following are few simple steps on how to make a garden tipi and a trellis.

Tipi
For some unusual and inexpensive support, building a tipi would be a great idea. A tipi is a basic form of a trellis. However, a tipi is only meant for light and seasonal climbers. To build a tipi, one needs four treated wooden poles, galvanized steel wire or nylon grip ropes. Push the four poles in the ground in such a manner, that their tips touch and they form a tent-like triangle shape, and secure the tip with steel wire or nylon rope. Weave the steel wire all across the triangle structure, and the tipi is ready.

Trellis Frames
The first thing one needs to assess is the type of trellis one needs to build. This decision is completely dependent on the type of veins (climber) one needs to trail. Most flower plants do not require heavy-built trellis, maybe except for climber rose plants. However, almost all vegetable plants need strong trellis. Lighter trellis are used for annual climbers like morning glory, sweet peas or cumbers, etc. For a light built trail use 2 x 2 inch boards, and half-inch lath, whereas for a heavy frame use 2 x 4 inch boards interwoven with ½ or 1 inch lath. For the post that is to be buried underground, use long lasting wood that has been treated for termite and rot. Do the same for all wooden structures above ground .

Most people prefer to use cedar as it is considered to be carpenter-friendly. Depending on the shape and size, saw poles out of the cedar. Weave one-half inch lath and secure (attach) every strip end to the wood frame. One can use preconstructed latticework strips also. Use treated nails to attach the frame, to prevent them from rusting. Once all your frames are constructed, dig a 2 to 3 feet deep hole in the ground, and secure the wooden frames using some cement and gravel.

Permanent and heavily built garden trellises should make use of rustproof treated steel corner brackets to hold the frame. Trellis built close to the walls, should have at least four to six inches of space (clearance) for ventilation. This would not only allow your plants to breathe, but prevent from rotting. Once the trellis has been appropriately placed, one can go ahead and grow any type and number of flowers or vegetable plants.

Very little effort is required to maintain a trellis. One just needs to regularly add a fresh paint of rustproof coat, and clear the plant rot from the garden trellis frame. The trellis will add beauty to your garden and support your beautiful plants.
