Broken Keys - Chapter Seven
Alana has been going through so much in the past six months but what will happen when, or if she finds out about the secret behind the Anthony brothers?
The next day strolled by and before. I could glance at the clock the school bell rang and class was over for the weekend. I sighed with relief, knowing that I was done learning for the week.
Instead of catching a ride home with Addie, who still was upset with me, I stayed after school with my dad. He sat peacefully at his desk, grading papers, while I walked around his large classroom examining all the instruments.
Eventually I ended up floating towards the black, shiny piano. I gently caressed the keys with my fingertips before I heard my dad get up from his chair and then ease his was over to me.
"Whatcha doing kiddo?" He asked absent-mindedly. "Admiring," I whispered. "Hmm." He thought for a minute. "You know what's better than admiring?" He questioned. "Singing," he answered his own question.
"It has been months honey. Just give it a try. I'll help you. I will play and you sing."
My throat let out a long over dramatic sigh, but I gave in. "Okay, dad." I answered. His face showed surprise, which was what I expected. I just said I'll try singing again and he has been encouraging me on for months. If I were he, I would be surprised as well.
I sat on top of the grand piano while my dad sat on the bench and slowly began playing. My heart began to ache but I needed to do this. I owed my dad so much and I was hoping singing for him would do good for the both of us. It was time to show him that I'm still here. Maybe not in complete pieces or fully myself, but parts of me were still here... Somewhere.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, waiting for the first notes. Immediately he started playing and instantly I knew the song. It came out a while ago but he knew I liked it and the beat was slow and steady which was a good place to start.
A gentle sigh escaped my lips before I slowly began a low whisper.
"No, I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret...
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore?
You lost the love I loved the most."
"I learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time..."
I held brief eye contact with my dad before I began to really sing. A small smile grew upon both, his lips as well as mine as I began to once again use my god given gift.
"And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?"
"I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms!"
I've learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time..."
Derrick's POV
So many things have been going on this week! Cameron and his crazy girlfriend always stir up trouble, the Morgan brothers were back, but most importantly I met the most incredible girl in my life. I knew there was something special about Alana from the moment I smelt her scent enter the High School. I knew what she was to me and so do my brothers, but how could I ever tell her my secret? She wouldn't believe me, would she?
As I was walking down the empty hallway with Noah and Drew, my ears picked up an unbelievable sound. It was someone's voice singing. I drew in the soft sound and began following it. I ended up at the back entrance of the music room. The guys caught up to me and began asking questions to why I came her. "Shh!" I answered. "Do you hear that?" I asked. "Yeah someone is singing." Drew answered. "The voice sounds familiar." Noah said. "Well whoever it is, they're amazing!" Drew exclaimed. "Let's take a look!" I said. The guys agreed, wanting to know whom on Earth could possible sing this well.
Quietly, the three of us entered in the back. My eyes grew wide as I saw whom this amazing singer was. "It's Alana!" I told the guys in amazement. "She's..." Noah started to say but none of us could find the words to describe how astounding her voice was.
I quietly watched her lips continue to belt out the beautiful lyrics.
"And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?
Dear, It took so long just to feel all right
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back.
And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Don't come back at all
Who do you think you are? (3 times)
She finished with single tear sliding down her cheek. I had to fight the urge to run up to her, hold her, and just make her feel safe and warm.
"Hun that was amazing," Mr. Valdez announced. "Thanks, dad but I still need to take a break for a while." Alana declared. "Alana, hiding your voice from the world isn't going to solve anything. As much as it hurts you have to try to find yourself again." "I don't 'have' to do anything!" She said raising her voice. "You're lucky I sang that song for you!" Her dad looked sad. "So you just sang to make me feel better?" Alana didn't respond but we knew that was correct. "Don't sing to make me feel better, Alana! You need to sing to make yourself feel better!" Her Mr. Valdez claimed.
"Dad, just stop! You don't understand anything!" She screamed before turning on her heels and exiting the room.
Noah, Drew, and I exited through the back door with astonishment on our minds. "Go get your girl," Noah told me while throwing me his keys. "Thanks," I smiled. I am so grateful to have family that understands everything that is going on. Next I ran out of the school in search for Alana.
I reached the parking lot, where I saw Alana heading, and found no one in sight. The sun already went down and dark clouds were beginning to flow towards my direction. Immediately rain started to pour. I quickly hopped in the car and drove towards the pathway that Alana would have taken in order to get home.
Alana's POV
It was absolutely freezing cold outside! I made a big mistake by choosing to walk home, but after fighting with my dad all I wanted was to be alone. I took a shortcut through an alleyway, which turned out to be another stupid mistake. After I walked for a while everywhere I turned led to a different pathway. I was completely lost in the dark in cold weather. Before I could even think that it couldn't get any worse the sky roared and suddenly rain began to pour. Every step I took led me deeper into the unknown. I was completely lost in the middle of nowhere.
Suddenly a loud crash came from the corner next to me. The sound was so loud and violent that my legs began moving before I even noticed that I was running. The moment my head turned to look back my body crashed into a hard figure. I was falling to the ground and landed with a loud thud. "Owe," I began to moan. I was definitely going to be sore in the morning; that is if I live to see the morning. My thoughts ventured to the mass that sent me flying to the ground and soon I found myself staring up into deep black eyes. "Hello beautiful." He smirked.
