Spears has had a rough couple of years and is now in the process of getting her life back in order and she has opened up about her past mistakes for the documentary. She said, "So much has gone on over the last couple of years and there’s a lot that people don’t know about me that I want them to know." She also said, "I wanted to make this film because I started to feel like I wasn’t being seen in the light that I wanted to be seen in. This is an opportunity to set the record straight and talk about what I’ve been through and where I’m headed."

Spears suffered through a very public divorce from Kevin Federline and a bitter custody battle over their two sons Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden James, 2. Earlier this year she was forced to enter a psychiatric hospital after she was involved in a standoff with the police when she refused to return her children to Federline. She also famously shaved her head and beat a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella.

Spears has begun turning her life around and recently recorded her sixth studio album Circus. The album features the single "Womanizer," which was released by Jive Records on September 26. Spears’ album will be released on December 2, her 27th birthday. Two days before that the documentary For the Record will air on MTV. Spears said of the documentary, "I’ve been through a lot, and there’s a lot people don’t know. I sit there and I look back: ‘I’m a smart person, what the hell was I thinking?’"
