Although Britney brought the headlines and an initial burst in fan interest for Simon Cowell and The X Factor, she was never really a fit for the show’s format. Britney has never displayed the type of live-action charisma that reality shows like American Idol and X Factor demand. Demi Lovato has that charisma - and she’s very likely to return to the show next year. But Britney never really needed X Factor and now she’s moving on.
At the end of the day, Brit is likely to take much more away from the show than she contributed to it. Kudos to her father and other handlers for putting the deal together - one that guaranteed Britney $15 million for a few months of "work" and put her personal brand on television a few times a week. Spears was, by most accounts, a boring judge by reality television standards. But she seemed genuinely interested and a member of her "team" made it to the show’s finale episode.
The fact that she didn’t have the live television chops to make a positive impact on a failing show really doesn’t say anything at all about her performance. If X Factor had a successful formula and a more engaging format, it’s very likely that people would be lauding Spears’ performance as "fun" and "genuine". But, because the show was already on a downward trajectory, Britney gets saddled with the baggage of having performed poorly.
In the weeks before the announcement that she would not be returning to the show, Britney offered some hints that perhaps this was a one-off experiment that had run its course. "It's no secret I'm a shy person," she said. "I feel doing this show over the past year has allowed me to come out of my shell a lot more. Everyone on the show has been amazing and made me feel really comfortable."
