British Sports Stars Cutting the Mustard on the World Stage
This article looks at current British Sports Stars who are excelling in their chosen fields and on the world stage.
In mainstream British sport there are one or two individuals who are really cutting the mustard on the world stage of their sports. Particularly in those sports where competition is at its most fierce and which is in a sport that is pursued by most countries in the world. Below is a list of those British sportsmen who either do already, or will carry their ability into sporting superstardom.
Football - Steven Gerrard of Liverpool is singled out as the best British player in the country and one of the top three or four in the world. Some could even argue that he is the best in the world and has been for several years. Gerrard is the heart and soul of Liverpool and it has been incumbent on his very broad shoulders why Liverpool have been to the fore of English and European football for so many years. At 28 he still as another good four years left in the tank and the name gerrard will be up in bright lights until at least the end of that period.
Tennis - Scot, Andy Murray is ranked fourth in his sport in the world, having jumped seven places for January 2008. In that 12 months period, Murray has won seven events and has the edge in his most recent encounters with the world’s top three of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic. His rise although not unexpected has been meteoric and he has earned the reputation of the man the top players want to avoid at all costs. Although he will never become a superstar until he has won his first Grand Slam, that prospect is surely not far away. After all Murray is only 22 years old.
Motor Sport - There will be many who will say that 22 year old Lewis Hamilton is already an international superstar, particularly having won his first Formula One Crown last season. His driving has sometimes been criticized but when he is in full flow there is not another driver that can come close to his ability or match his verve. Lewis in two seasons has become runner and champion and he is young enough to become certainly Britain’s greatest ever driver and possibly even the world’s.
Boxing - Although boxing has seen much of its previous glory disappear, there has still been one or two fighters who have produced the performances that still sell out the arena’s. There is no better example of this than the Mancunian, Ricky Hatton. Hatton is unbeaten at his correct weight in over 30 pulsating fights. He ducks nobody and the fan is always guaranteed of a non-stop show with Hatton usually the more belligerent. He has had 46 fights with 45 wins, most of the recent being world championships. His only defeat came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather, but it was obvious that Ricky, who had to go up a weight division; had taken on someone just too big for him. His next fight is against the unbeaten Manny Pacquiano in Las Vegas on May 2nd and will be one of the biggest box office and online betting events of the sporting year.
