Brewing Coffee Instructions
There are three main methods that are used to brew coffee, namely boiling, stepping or pressure brewing. These days drip brewing coffee has also become very popular. Brewing coffee using the boiling method was the earliest method used to make coffee.
You can use any one of the methods to brew coffee at home, but there are some factors, that are common to all the methods. The coffee, that you are going to use has an important role to play, so that you get the perfect brew. The best coffee is the one that is just recently roasted. Fresh roasted coffee is one of the important factor for a superb cup of coffee. Never purchase your coffee in bulk. It is always better to purchase coffee in small amounts, so that it lasts only for 1 to 2 weeks. The size of the grind has an important role to play in the coffee. If the coffee is bitter in taste, it is probably over-extracted or ground very fine. On the other hand if the coffee tastes flat, it means it is under-extracted.
The water you are going to use, which also plays an important role in the quality of coffee you choose to make. Either use filtered or bottled water, but do not use distilled or softened water. If you are going to use tap water, let it run a few seconds, before you fill the coffee pot.
The next in the line is the ratio of coffee to water. Proper amount of coffee should be used to brew coffee without a coffee maker or with a coffee maker. As a general rule, 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee is used for every 6 ounces of water. You can make changes to this proportions depending on the individual taste.
You will have to maintain accurate water temperature between 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal extraction of coffee. If the water is colder, then you will have flat under-extracted coffee. On the other hand, if the water is too hot, then it will cause loss of quality in the taste of the coffee. When you are brewing coffee without a coffee machine, make sure you let the water come to a full boil, but that does not mean over boil the water. Turn off the heat and let the water to rest for a minute, before you pour it.
Another important factor, which will affect the taste of the coffee is brewing time. Brewing time is the amount of time the water is in contact with the coffee grounds. If you are going to use the drip coffee brewing method, then the brewing time is 5 minutes. When making coffee using espresso method, the brewing time is the shortest, at 20 to 30 seconds. If you realize that the taste of your coffee is not optimum, then it means, you are either over-extracting the coffee or under-extracting it.
After brewing coffee, pour it into a warmed mug or coffee cup, so that the temperature is maintained for a longer period of time. Brewed coffee starts losing its taste moments after it is brewed, hence it is recommended, you brew only that much coffee, as much it is required for immediate consumption. In case you do make extra coffee store it in a flask, but not for more than 45 minutes. It is important not to reheat the coffee once it is made. If you are going to use coffee machine to brew coffee it is recommended, you do not brew milk coffee in it. However, you can opt to brew your coffee with milk in a pot instead with one part coffee and one part milk. Boil milk before you use it for brewing coffee.
