Nutrition for Breast Cancer Patients
Consumption of plant-based foods forms the crux of breast cancer nutrition. These foods are known to avoid the recurrence of breast cancer. Following is the list of food items that can effectively ward off breast cancer.
Vegetables and Fruits
Vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber are useful in preventing the occurrence of breast cancer. Orange colored fruits, rich in carotene have properties which help prevent breast cancer. The vegetables that have a high potential of preventing cancer include:
- Orange vegetables like carrots, winter squash, pumpkins
- Dark green vegetables like spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, Swiss chard
- Vegetables from the allium family like onions, garlic, scallions, leeks
- Beans such as lentils, peas, kidney beans, navy beans etc.
Whole grains have potent antioxidants which are said to have anti-cancer properties. Hence, forget about the low carb diet and opt for whole grains.
- Whole wheat bread
- Brown rice
- Whole wheat pasta
- Soy bean and soy products like soy milk, tofu etc.
Meat and fish are high in protein, which is useful in rebuilding the muscles and tissues. This property is particularly important, because breast cancer treatment includes chemotherapy and radiation which results in loss of tissues and muscles. Eating lots of fish is known to help breast cancer patients. The varieties of meat and fish, effective in preventing the occurrence of breast cancer are:
- Cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel etc.
- White meat such as poultry, turkey etc.
- Lean beef, lean pork, lean lamb
- Omega-3 essential fatty acids rich fish such as albacore tuna, herring and the cold water fish mentioned above have anti-cancer properties.
Caffeine drinks like tea and coffee should be restricted to 2-3 cups a day. Alcohol consumption should be done in moderation. Drink lots of water, at least 8-10 glasses everyday. Increase your intake of fresh fruit juices, especially juices of orange, lemon, sweet lime etc.
Although, it is impossible to completely prevent the occurrence of breast cancer, we can at least minimize the risk factor by opting for proper nutrition. No matter if you are undergoing a treatment for cancer or have just recovered from one, a proper and balanced diet can help in rebuilding the body tissues and strengthen the weakened muscles. Exercises, proper nutrition and medication can help you protect from yet another bout of breast cancer.
