Brain MRI Scan

One of the most successful medical procedures to establish diagnosis of different conditions of the brain, is a brain MRI scan. Get a quick overview about this medical procedure from this article.
There are several conditions which can have their ill effects on the brain and in order to make a study of the internal structures of the brain, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan is the most efficient method. Apart from just investigating about tumors, strokes and infections, a brain MRI scan is used to detect aneurysm, bleeding in the brain, hormonal disorders, abnormal brain development and multiple sclerosis. Determining the causes of conditions such as headaches, vision problems, hearing loss, speaking difficulties, muscle weakness, or numbness and tingling are also taken care of by the use of this diagnostic tool. If a person is suffering from abnormal changes in his thinking or behavior, then the reason for such a condition is also addressed by using the scan.

Facts About Brain MRI Scan

The patient will be advised to wear loose and comfortable clothing before the procedure begins. He/she would have to remove any metal objects such as rings, phones and the like. Presence of such objects may create errors in the images produced.

Generally, the patient will lie on a narrow table, which would transport him/her into the MRI machine. Some patients might be suffering from claustrophobia (a morbid fear of being closed in a confined space). So it would be wise to let the doctor know about this beforehand. To adjust to such a situation, the doctor may give you medicines which may make you fall asleep or he may also put you for an open MRI scan, wherein, the machine would not be so close to the body.

The table where the patient lies on may be cold and hard and so he may get the aid of a pillow or blanket. The working of the machine produces loud noises and so the patient can also request for ear plugs.

A mode of communication between the patient and the person who is operating the scanner may also be present. Once the patient gets comfortable, small devices will be placed on his head. These are for improving the quality of the images.

The patient may also be advised to refrain from eating or drinking about 4-6 hours prior the brain MRI scan. This again depends on the area being examined. The procedure may get stretched to about 1 hour depending on the type of equipment and the areas to be scanned.

The patient must inform the radiologist about his medical history, if any. People with severe kidney disease are not considered to be eligible candidates to receive contrast materials (a substance that is opaque to x-rays; when administered it allows a radiologist to examine the organ or tissue it fills).

Expecting mothers are also required to inform their physician about their state. Although, there are no potential side effects of MRI scan on pregnant women, the baby inside will be under the effect of strong magnetic field. So it is always wise to discuss the options available.

People who are not considered as suitable candidates for a brain MRI scan or any other MRI scans for that matter, are those with objects such as internal (implanted) defibrillator or pacemaker, cochlear implants and brain aneurysm clips. People with artificial heart valves, implanted drug infusion ports, implanted nerve stimulators, metal pins, screws, plates, stents or surgical staples are also advised to have a discussion, before they go for any such scan.

Apart from all these aspects, another important factor is the cost that would be incurred by the patient during the brain MRI scan. If the patient is insured, then he/she would have to get the proceedings of the scan approved by the insurance company. In case the patient is not insured, then he/she may have to look up the prices before going for any such scan, as prices may vary. Apart from other factors, prices are mostly determined by the procedure being carried at hospital or at an outpatient imaging center. According to a certain survey regarding the prices, results showed that some hospitals cost around $1750 - $2200, while some outpatient centers priced the scan in between $700 - $1000. It is also important to know for patients that there are some hospitals and outpatient centers which offer discounts.
