Moves and Techniques in Boxing

Grab the Jab
Jab is the most simplest and primary of the boxing punches. After you get in to the appropriate stance, what you do is simply perform a quick jab towards the opponent. With your chin tucked in, aim through the target, rather than the target surface. Moreover, you need to align the first 2 knuckles with the target. From the arm to the shoulder, a straight line should be maintained and finally hip and shoulder extension is important for getting enough power.

Uppercut
Beware fellas! This type of punch may get the best of you! Yes, the uppercut is quite an effective move, targeted towards the chin. In tandem with the cross, it is considered as one of the power punches, as far as statistics are concerned. The technique involves the boxer's fist in a position protecting your face. It is followed by lowering one hand with maximum power and thrust, getting it straight up till the opponent's jaw. Extending your knees as the body comes up, gives the requisite power to the punch. The most important part is that it should be done when the opponent is in close range.

Cross
Fundamentally a power punch, it is also referred to as 'straight'. The dominant hand is used to deliver this power punch, at the same time the opponent leads with his opposite hand. As the blow crosses over the leading arm, it is called the cross. It is targeted towards the face.

Hook it Up
Hook is another punch in the long list of punches in boxing. Primarily a semi circular punch, it is delivered using the lead hand to the side of the opponent's head. In a guard position, the elbow has to be drawn back. The fist at this juncture is in a horizontal position, with knuckles pointing forward and a bent elbow. At the same time, the rear hand has to be tucked firmly against the jaw for protecting your chin. Further, the torso and hips have to be rotated clockwise, which then propel the wrist through a clockwise and tight arc across the front of the body. This eventually connects with the target.

Crouching Tiger
Crouching is not exactly one of the proper moves, but it is surely one of the techniques for defending yourself. This is basically a type of boxing stance and has 2 variations. There is a semi crouch as well as the full crouch. Leaning forward, while keeping your feet together is the essence of this stance. In a full crouch, the fists are tucked against the chin and the boxer has to lean back a bit.

Sway
In the sway technique, anticipating a punch and then moving the upper body or head back is employed by the boxer. Doing this helps that boxer lessen the impact of the punch or perhaps even dodge it.

Clinch
Clinch can be called a type of grappling, where the boxers have no distance left between them and none of the punches can be used. Here one of the boxers tries to pin down or hold the opponent's hands to prevent him from throwing punches.

There are many more of such moves which are used by boxers everyday. Eventually, the stance and the way you defend yourself equips you well to throw the punches. At the end of the day, how to implement these techniques is totally up to the boxer!

So, are you ready to throw in a jab?! Go punch!
