Once you get to know the basic technique about holding the flowers together, you can make various boutonnieres for various occasions like prom night and wedding as well.

Preparation Instructions

Though roses are the hot favorites for making boutonnieres for prom and homecoming, you can practically use any flower that you like. No matter what the type of flower, it is very important to make sure that the flower you use, stays fresh throughout the event. You can also use fake flowers that look as fresh as the original ones. Most importantly, you must not overwhelm the flower with a lot of green ferns, bunchy laces and such materials. The idea is to keep it as simple as possible. For that, here are the instructions on how to make a boutonniere for homecoming.

Material Needed
  • Rosebud with attached leaves
  • Floral tape
  • Baby's breath
  • Corsage pins
  • Ribbon
Directions

Trim the head of the rose. Make it a point to leave only about one inch of the stem with the flower. Cut a 7 inch piece of the floral tape and set it aside. Now, select large enough leaves (which would serve as the backdrop) and set them aside. Make sure you leave enough stem at the bottom of the flower. Now measure and cut the baby's breath to the exact length of the leaves that you have selected for the backdrop of your boutonniere.

Now here is the trickiest part of making the boutonniere - arrangement of the materials. For that, set the leaves on the table and place the baby's breath on them. Then place the rose and hold the stem together in one of your hands. Now, tightly wrap the stems with the floral tape. Make sure you start wrapping the tape from the top towards the bottom. If you wish, you can tie a small knot of ribbon at the bottom of this boutonniere. Well, if you are using fresh flowers, then make sure you make the boutonniere just before the event. Also, store it in a semi-moist place or a refrigerator.

Apart from greenery and baby's breath, you can also opt for the magic lights with the matching colors of your flowers! As I said earlier, you can substitute rose bud with any other flower that has a tough stem and large heads. For instance, gerbera, daisy, calla lily, carnation, etc can all be used to make a boutonniere. Before selecting the flowers for making the boutonnieres, make sure that you consider the color of homecoming dresses that you both are wearing. Its color should complement the color of your attire.

As a precaution, you may also want to check that your date doesn't have an allergy to the flower that you are selecting! Traditionally, boutonnieres for homecoming are worn on the left lapel and you should practice pinning it up on some other object (or person), before pinning it on the lapel of your beau.
