Boston Terriers

The Boston Terrier is a small, affectionate dog that makes a great companion for people of all ages. An ilk that emerged as a result of the crossing of two other breeds, it has a distinctive appearance.

A dog is the best gift you can give yourself. My advice to those who wish to experience unconditional love is, make a dog a part of your family.

The parents of the first Boston Terrier were an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier. When these two breeds were crossed, the new Terrier breed that emerged was called by several names, from Yankee Terrier to Roundhead! This new breed was much larger than the present-day Boston Terrier, and weighed about 30 pounds. It officially got the name 'Boston Terrier' from the American Kennel Club in 1893.

The Boston Terrier has a very unique appearance. Its muzzle, blaze between the eyes, band around the neck, chest, half way up the forelegs and up to the hocks on the rear legs are pristine white. The rest is usually black, but may also be brindle or seal. Much like penguins, these little 'gentlemen' dogs give the impression of a tuxedo. At the shoulder, Boston Terriers are usually a foot and a half tall and weigh between 10 to 25 pounds. They have broad, round heads with bat-like upright ears and a blunt muzzle. Though small, they are muscular and strongly built and have an aggressive stance. Their coat is short, smooth and shiny, if well-maintained.

Due to its pleasant disposition, this dog is considered to be an ideal companion for children. Intelligent and sedate, the Boston Terrier shares more than just the refined look of a gentleman. Apart from their unique personality traits, most Boston Terriers carry trademark doggie characteristics, of being affectionate, alert, expressive and oftentimes, strong willed. They enjoy spending time with the entire family, so it is imperative for every dog owner to take out time for their pet.

Caring for your Boston Terrier

When you get yourself any dog, an essential task is to take him to the vet. A dog needs a number of vaccinations and may need worm medication or a flea collar. The vet will also advise you as to what diet will best suit your dog. Regular walks are mandatory for any dog and are the primary component of a Boston Terrier's exercise regimen. Its playful nature takes care of the need for any additional exercise. It needs brushing once a week and it is a good practice to clean its face with wet cotton everyday, clearing away any dirt collected around the eyes.

Boston Terrier puppies are absolutely adorable and relatively easy to train. Training for a Boston Terrier must start as soon as possible and go on till required. It is very important to remember that this breed responds to positive assertion. Scolding or smacking your puppy will only upset and antagonize him. The foremost thing your puppy needs to learn about is potty training. This process may take a while, though most pet owners manage it in about three weeks. Though not difficult to do, it requires patience and constant vigilance. He must be taken out three to four times a day, at fixed intervals, to the area where he can relieve himself. These trips should take place following meals and naps. While training your pup to obey an order, indicate to him what you expect him to do and constantly repeat the word you want him to respond to. For example, while teaching him to sit, gently push down his rear, while repeating the word 'sit' and reward him with a treat when he does.

Owning a Boston Terrier will bring tremendous warmth and joy to your life. Not only is he a great companion, but also makes the perfect date for a black and white ball. After all, he was born in a tux!
