Books on Cake Decorating

Don't waste your money on cake decorating classes that only teach individual techniques. Learn with books that will teach a whole concept and improve your skills.
Cake decorating is a passion of mine. I love the artistic part of decorating. Mind you I'm no where near an artist. My six year old daughter can draw better than me. So if anyone asked me to draw them a cake, I would be lost. But ask me to decorate a cake, for some reason I can visualize a cake in my head then decorate it the way I see it. Now this of course isn't without some type of decorating training. If you don't already know, cake decorating can be very messy especially if you have no idea what you're doing. The up side of this is you don't have to go to culinary school or decorating school to learn.

In my experience books on cake decorating are great tools. It's a one time buy and you have them forever to refer back too. Especially now since most books are eBooks and or DVD base. In most cases you have the option of either hard copy or eBook.

Cake decorating books have a lot of advantages; you just have to know which ones you will learn more effectively from. It depends on what part of cake decorating you want to learn. Can you decorate a cake, but are horrible at baking them? Are you really good with buttercream, but have never used fondant or gumpaste? Maybe you wonder how in the world people stack their cakes. Unfortunately, there is not a book on cake decorating that will teach you from start to finish. There's not even a class that will teach you that. Most classes focus on one technique and that's it. And yes you will be paying hundreds of dollars to learn how to make a flower with gumpaste in a class.

I started out my career taking classes and paying A LOT for classes. I began getting really frustrated down the road though, when I realized there are always more classes to take. One class doesn't ever teach you multiple techniques.

No they save that for the next class and your money. The down side to that is you only have your notes to refer back too, if you took any. So I finally said forget it, not only can I not afford more classes, I can't keep scheduling my life around them. So I went searching for alternatives.

I have a wide variety of books on cake decorating and I'm a member of a cake decorating online community. Some books are useful and some aren't. There are books that form around one whole concept. Not just one technique, but one whole concept. I've found these cake decorating books to be more valuable. They are not jumping all over the place, because you really can't expect your buttercream to look smooth on your cake if you don't know how to properly cut and fill it. One proper technique will always ensure the success of another.

No matter where you are in your cake decorating career, there will be great books that will teach you how to get to the next level. You just need to know which ones are great for you.
