Duties of an Accountant
Though certain accountant's duties will be different in each company, most of the responsibilities are actually very similar. The main responsibility is to keep a record of the daily money transactions of the company. He is the person who goes through the bank statements at the end of every month to make sure that there is a proper balance between bank deposits and withdrawals. Apart from this, he is also expected to maintain general ledgers for all accounts and ensure that all the figures are in order. In certain companies, accountant is also responsible for conducting an audit check to verify accounting done both manually or with the help of computers. Along with this, he may also have to prepare accounting, statistical, auditing as well as financial reports of the company.

In certain companies, the accountant has the responsibility of doing the payroll of the employees. For this, he has to be aware of the rules and regulations provided by the government regarding tax deductions. He may also have the duty of preparing annual tax returns. Another duty is to keep a record of the vendor invoices and make the payment before the due date. He also has to keep a record of the money that has to be received by the company and make sure that they are deposited properly in the bank.

Educational Qualifications
Though bookkeeping does not require specialized training, it is required for an individual to have at least a high school diploma. However, having a college degree or may be a diploma in accounting or bookkeeping can help the person in earning more. Most companies give on-the-job training to candidates to help them understand the financial proceedings of the company. An individual who aspires to become an accountant should have a knack of handling numbers. They are required to handle large sums of money and be very organized, in order to avoid the loss of important papers and documents. Moreover, bookkeeping can be tedious job because one has to update the accounts on a regular basis. Apart from this, he should be alert, not only to avoid making mistakes, but also to point out the mistakes made by others.

Pay Packet
When it comes to salary, there are several factors that have to be considered. The total salary would generally depend on the size of the company, duties and responsibilities and perquisites offered to the accountant. Depending on these factors, many accountants are paid on an hourly basis. However, on an average, the salary can be anywhere between $30,000 to $50,000. Nevertheless, this is just the starting salary i.e. the salary that a fresher receives. In other words, the salary of an accountant varies as per his qualifications and work experience.
