Book One: Revelations - Chapter 9

Derrick's games come to a head.
When I went downstairs in the morning, Mr. Thompson was more himself. "Good morning Miss. Townsend." He said with a smile.

I smiled back, "Good morning Mr. Thompson."

We both sat quietly and finished our breakfast. I took his empty bowl to the sink with mine and washed them. When I turned around, he was standing in the doorway with my book bag in his hands. "Are you ready?" he asked.

"Yes Sir, I am." I said with a warm smile.

On the drive to school, Mr. Thompson looked like he needed to say something. It was killing me. When we finally got out of the car, I stood by the car and looked at him. "What is on your mind?" I asked quietly.

"This isn't the time or place for this discussion." He said. I did not like the sound of those words.

"We are alone, it's just us. There is no better time or place. Tell me." I said.

"Sarah, I am your protector. I would do anything in this world to protect you. I cannot do my job, if I become too close to you. It's not fair to you, if I've made you feel more for me than what is possible." His face was conflicted as he spoke to me.

My gut was churning and I didn't know what to say. His face told me one thing but his words said something else entirely. I felt that old, familiar coldness take over my heart and the old fake Sarah started to emerge. I understood what he was doing yesterday. He was trying to distance himself. He knows what is in my mind and what is in my heart. I can't say that I am in love with Erik, but I am heading in that direction. I already care too much about him and perhaps he cares more for me than he is comfortable with.

"Don't worry about me Mr. Thompson. I'm a big girl. I'm used to being alone, you know that." I gave him my fake smile then turned and walked away.

The rest of the morning, was one big surprise after another. My English Literature teacher decided I was too advanced for her class, so she changed my schedule. I now took strength training during first period and Advance English Literature last period. Wonderful! I was really enjoying kicking Derrick's butt in fencing. Now I had to go lift weights instead. Do I look like the kind of girl who wants to be solid muscle with no neck? I like an athletic body, but I believe women should have soft curves.

When I walked into choir class, Janice was back! Derrick and Janice were whispering to each other and they were having a serious conversation. This just reminded me of that old feeling I had about Derrick. There is something off about him. Derrick popped his head up and noticed I was watching him. His initial expression scared the crap out of me. He wore the same dark look that Duncan Black wore. Derrick quickly changed his expression and turned into his cocky self. He looked and acted like two completely different people. When Derrick turned into his cocky persona, Janice whipped her head around and caught me staring at her. She was not happy to see me. Those two were hiding something. Well two people can play games! I put on my own fake smile and walked over to him. Janice quickly walked away when I came over.

"Hey Angel, ready to practice?" Derrick asked as if nothing had just happened.

"Yep, I sure am. Hey guess what? They're forcing me to take Advanced English Lit, so I can't take fencing anymore! Doesn't that suck?"

He stopped walking and studied me for a minute. "Who is making you change?"

"Mrs. Johnson! I came to school this morning and she handed me a new class schedule!" I sounded outraged, though I was now sort of relieved. I was feeling like a pawn in a chess game at the moment.

He studied me again to see if I were telling him the truth and then he put his arm around my shoulders as we walked over to Mel sitting at the piano. He looked back behind us and gave an evil eye to Mr. Thompson. "That sucks Angel. We'll have to spend more time after school together then." He made his voice loud enough so most of the people in the room could hear him, but I knew he only wanted Mr. Thompson to hear him.

"Hey Sarah, I'm sorry I never got a chance to call you last night like I said I would." She really did seem upset by that. Mel was too sweet of a girl to be in this school full of sharks.

"Oh, that's ok Mel. I don't mind." I reassured her.

"What did you do on Sunday?" Mel asked.

"Sarah and I went to the movies together." Derrick told her with his arm still around me.

I smiled at her, "Yeah, but Mr. Thompson had to chaperone of course." I rolled my eyes for both of them.

They both laughed. "He keeps too tight of a leash on you Angel!" Derrick said with narrowed eyes as he glanced over at Mr. Thompson. I refused to follow his gaze. I just shrugged at his irritation. There wasn't anything to say. Anything I said would encourage or enrage Derrick. Silence was a much better option at the moment.

Mel was very observant about the situation and chimed in, "Oh, Sarah just comes from a very old-fashioned family." I smiled at her letting her know I thanked her.

"Well, let's get our practice in, before you guys have to go do the group practice." I said. Ms. Carlson had agreed to allow the small group, duet, soloist and Jazz group to practice for the first 30mins of each class. After that it was time for the full choir to practice which I was not a part of.

Mel started the song and then Derrick and I practiced walking towards each other until we were hand in hand singing the last verses. When I finished the last verse, Derrick leaned in like he was going to kiss me and I quickly stepped back. I gave him a little scolding look and he laughed with his devilish grin. That boy does not give up. When we finished our practice I went and sat next to Mr. Thompson. I did not meet Mr. Thompson's eyes as I sat down on the floor beside his feet. I kept my eyes fixed on Mel during the rest of the class. I figured it was the safest place to keep my gaze.

After class I started to walk out of the classroom with Mel and Derrick, when I heard Ms. Carlson call to Mr. Thompson. "Erik, can I speak with you for a moment please?" She asked. She looked at me and then back at him. She obviously meant alone. I nodded to her and him. Mr. Thompson's jaw clenched and he looked from me to Derrick. He was not happy about this situation but then he nodded back at me. I know him well and he doesn't like me away from his sight, especially with Derrick standing next to me.

The three of us walked to the café as Derrick put his arm over my shoulders. "So, Mr. Thompson will let you go free, if his woman beckons him to her side?" Derrick said. I understood his double meaning and he was cutting me deep right now. He was playing a dangerous game. "Mel we'll catch up to you in a minute. I need to speak with Sarah, alone." He said in a very strong authoritative tone that didn't sound like Derrick.

Mel looked from me to Derrick and then hesitantly said, "Ok, I'll save you guys a spot." Then she turned and walked away.

"What games are you up to Derrick?" I asked as I turned my head and noticed we were standing by ourselves.

"Come on Sarah, I thought you liked games." He said as he reached his hand up and traced my lips. I flinched back from him and he laughed. "You've never even kissed a guy, have you? Aren't you tired of being a caged little bird?" He purred and his face looked nothing like the Derrick I knew. It was colder, darker and scarier. How did I miss read him this badly? I knew he liked to play games, but he was looking at me with evil in his eyes. Evil is something I know too well.

My heart was racing. "No, I have not and sometimes." I admitted while I stepped back from him.

He laughed a dark bone chilling laugh. "Sarah, you could be so much more than you are now. Don't you want to be set free from your cage?"

And then I knew, beyond a doubt he was connected to Duncan Black. It was time for me to play dumb. "Derrick, you're frightening me. I don't know what you are talking about." I said.

Derrick pushed me into the lockers and pressed himself against me, "Don't play games with me, Sarah. You know exactly what I am talking about."

"No!" I yelled at him and tried to push him away. He moved a little but he grabbed my arms and pinned them behind me.

"Sarah, you can be so much more powerful than you ever dreamed of! Don't you want to be off your little leash?" His mouth was practically on mine. His eyes glazed over then he put his nose into my hair and inhaled. "Mmm - This boy is not allowed to have you My Sweet. You are mine."

I froze and looked at his face. "It's you?" I whispered.

"Yes, My Sweet, I control him. I control quite a few little pets. But I wanted to feel you for myself so I pushed the boy out of my way. Now where were we?" He pressed his erection into me and laughed darkly.

"Get off me!" I yelled at him.

"What are you going to do Sarah?" Derrick's voice purred though I knew it wasn't him anymore. One of his hands started to run up my thigh under my skirt and brushed along my panty line. His touch revolted me.

"This!" I seethed through clenched teeth and with every ounce of power I had, I summoned a gust of air that slammed him into the lockers across the hall from us. Just then I noticed Mr. Thompson was sprinting from down the hall and he was almost to me. His look told me he watched everything. He was murderous.

Ms. Carlson was running behind him. When I saw her, I panicked. How the hell was I going to explain what just happened? As Mr. Thompson approached he put his hand on my arm and then looked at Derrick. I quickly looked from him to Ms. Carlson coming up from behind him. He understood and put one finger to his lips. I gave a tiny nod.

"What happened?" Ms. Carlson demanded as she went over to check on Derrick who was still dazed and not speaking. His head slammed so hard into the lockers he left a huge dent in them. She looked very upset as she looked over Derrick. Derrick was still lying unconscious on the ground.

"Miss. Townsend defended herself from his very unwanted advances. From what I could see he was on the verge of violating her!" His eyes bore into mine. The pain in my eyes confirmed his statement. Then his eyes looked pained, before they flashed back to anger when he looked back over at Derrick with murder in his eyes.

"Miss. Townsend, how were you able to slam this young man so hard into the lockers?" She asked me, but her eyes were narrowed on Mr. Thompson. Derrick was starting to groan and trying to move now. I had hoped I caused permanent damage.

"I've been teaching Miss. Townsend self defense." Mr. Thompson said simply.

She glared at him for a second before her face transformed into ambivalence. "Oh, well I guess that might explain it. I had better get Derrick to the nurse's station." She said as she helped Derrick to his feet. Ms. Carlson and Derrick never looked over to me or Mr. Thompson as they left.

As soon as Ms. Carlson was out of ear shot Mr. Thompson turned to me. "I knew I shouldn't have let you walk out that door with him. I didn't think he would have tried anything here at the school. Did he harm you? Did he TOUCH you?"

I put my hand on his arm and reached up on my tiptoes to whisper in his ear. He saw was I was doing so leaned down for me. "Don't worry about me, but it's more than you think." I said urgently.

His face snapped back to mine. He knew from my look something very serious just happened and it wasn't just a teenage boy trying to get his hands on a girl. He leaned his ear back down to me so I whispered as quickly and quietly as I could. We couldn't let people interrupt us or see us. "Derrick knows everything about me. He noted that since Ms. Carlson, your lover, beckoned you to her side you were quick to set me free. You even set me free into the arms of someone you hated. Then he asked if I were tired of being on your leash. He told me I could be more powerful than I ever dreamed of. I just had to let myself be set free. It wasn't him talking. It was Duncan Black. I am absolutely positive it was him talking. He said Derrick was one of his many little pets. I saw Derrick and Janice talking earlier and when Derrick looked at me he had the same look that Duncan Black wore. Duncan is controlling him and it was Duncan who put his hand up my skirt."

By the time I finished, his whole body had turned into a statue. His face wore too many emotions for me to read. "Did he..."

I quickly pressed my finger to his lips. "Shhhh" I said as I watched pain cross his face.

His jaw tightened and he looked at me for a moment. Finally he calmed himself and continued. "My actions have been unforgivable. I seem to make all the wrong choices when I am around you. I convince myself they are the best for you, for me, for us, but they end up having terrible repercussions. Sarah, I am beyond sorry, for the pain my stubbornness has caused you." He turned his face away in shame and I desperately wanted to touch his cheek to comfort him. He turned and looked at my face. "Please let me walk you to lunch, like I should have done in the first place." I didn't speak. I turned and walked with him to the cafeteria.

When I sat down next to Melody, I didn't have much energy to fake a smile. "Sarah, are you ok?" She whispered.

"I'm fine Mel." I gave her a small smile and quickly ate my lunch.

"What happened to Derrick?" she asked. I turned my eyes to Janice who was watching me. I narrowed them on her.

"I'll call you tonight. There are too many ears here!" I said. Mel looked in the direction of my gaze and understood completely. Her eyes also narrowed on Janice.

After lunch Mr. Thompson came to my table and sat down across from me. I looked at him puzzled and said goodbye to Mel. We sat in silence as we waited for the cafeteria to clear. "Sarah, would you like me to ask Ms. Carlson to change your duet partner?" He asked.

"As much, as I would love to have someone else as a partner, it would just bring up too many questions. Plus I don't want to upset Mel. She has worked too hard on this. I don't have fencing anymore so I will only have to see him during choir class. After the competition, I won't have to put up with him anymore."

"I understand." He said but he wasn't happy.

"Can I ask why Ms. Carlson had to speak to you?" I asked.

"Not here, not now." He said and looked away from me.

"Fine, can we go home now?" I asked.

"Yes. Let's go home." As we walked out to the car, I looked over to where Derrick parks his car. I saw two figures in his car. The driver was Derrick, but I didn't know who was in the passenger seat. It wasn't Janice, the hair was too long. I nudged Mr. Thompson in the arm and he turned to look where I was looking. His whole body went rigid again as we walked. Derrick and the other person looked to be in an intimate conversation. Erik quickly looked forward to our car and I did as he did.

Mr. Thompson clearly recognized who was sitting in the car with Derrick. When we left the parking lot, he drove in the opposite direction of Derrick's car.

When we got home, Mr. Thompson disappeared into the study. I went upstairs and changed out of my school uniform.

I sat on my window seat and worked on my homework. As usual I started with my favorite subjects first. I read two of my assigned chapters for my new Advanced English Literature class before it was time to head downstairs to call Jess. I grabbed my book bag and headed downstairs. I would need to work on math tonight and I was hoping Mr. Thompson could help me with it.

"Oh my God Jess, what is on your neck?" I shouted at her when she logged in and I saw a huge hickey on her neck.

"Good grief, Sarah it's just a hickey. I met up with my man last night!"

"Are you two getting serious?" I asked her.

"I don't know yet, but we're having fun!" she flashed her big teasing grin at me. "Enough about me, tell me about this boy you went to the movies with!"

"Ugh Jess! He's horrible. I don't want to talk about it."

"Did he hurt you Sarah?" She always became very overprotective if she thought someone was hurting me just as I did with her.

I sighed at her! I knew I would have to tell her something. "He just got a little too physical with me today and wouldn't back off when I told him no, so I kicked him into the lockers behind us."

"Oh my God Sarah! I'm so sorry! No wonder you don't like boys." she said.

I gave her half a smile. "Sorry, I'm not in a better mood for you tonight Jess."

"Don't you worry about it! You have every right to be mad and upset. That boy is a Jackass."

"Thanks Jess."

After I hung up from Jess, I called Mel. We didn't talk too long, but I told her the same exact story I told Jess. It would be easier for me to remember that way. Melody had the same reaction as Jess!

I grabbed my book bag and curled up in my favorite club chair. Since Calculus is my worst subject and the class I am furthest behind in, I had better stop procrastinating. I started with the homework from the beginning of the semester. I worked through two weeks worth of assignments before I felt like I was going to hurt someone if I looked at another math problem. I was struggling to understand the math problems and I was getting frustrated which is not a good thing for me. I needed help with my nerves and I needed help with my homework. I checked the clock to make sure I still had time before dinner. I've only been studying for an hour! It felt like an eternity.

I looked back through my textbook to try to understand what it was showing me. God I hate math! Why can't they just write it out and explain it? Why do they insist on showing the formulas and expect you to magically understand what they mean.

I called down the hallway for Mr. Thompson. Nothing! I went to the study and knocked on the door, "Mr. Thompson". I called, but he did not answer. I went into the kitchen were Charlotte was busy at work. "Hey Charlotte, do you know where Mr. Thompson is at?"

"No, sorry Dear I haven't seen him for a while. Is there anything I can do to help?" she said.

I slumped down on the stool beside her. "You wouldn't by chance know anything about Calculus would you?"

"Oh, for heaven's sake no." She chuckled. "I didn't have to learn anything like that when I was in school. You stumped?"

I put my elbows on the island's counter and rested my chin in my hands. "Yes, I hate math. I'm getting really frustrated. I was hoping Mr. Thompson would remember Calculus and be able to help me."

"Do you have a lot of problems to do tonight dear?" she asked.

"Too many! Mr. Hill gave me the entire semester's worth of assignments. He said he would give me extra credit if I completed the early semester's assignments. Ugh!" I laid my head on the counter with my face buried in my arms.

Charlotte came over and patted me on the shoulder.

"I guess, I'll go try to study some more!" I moaned as I went back to the south sitting room and plopped back into the club chair. But I couldn't study. I had too much to think about. The person in the car with Derrick, seemed familiar, but I never saw their face. There were still too many kids at school that I didn't know yet.

I turned my head to the fire place and watched the flames flicker around the logs. The varying shades of orange and yellow danced in patterns as I focused on the flame. The dancing flame was beautiful, mesmerizing and seductive. I watched it grow larger and larger.

I shuddered and realized the flame was getting out of hand. I cleared my mind and let the flame die off. I was proud of myself for bringing the flame back in control. It excited me. I dropped down on the floor in front of the fireplace and brought the flame back up. I dropped it low then slowly built it higher. I danced it around the logs and swirled it around. It was beautiful.

Erik knelt down beside me and I jumped. "I came in to see why you were late for dinner." He spoke softly watching my face.

"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't know what time it was. I just...."

He put a finger to my lips and said "Ssshhh, It's ok. We've had a lot to think about today. Leave the fire burning, it's cold in here." He grabbed my hand and led me to the dining room.

We ate dinner in our usual silence, but neither of us had much of an appetite. Where was he at earlier? He could have been outside I guess. When we finished picking at our food we sat and looked at each other for a few minutes.

"Not very hungry tonight?" he asked.

"No, I don't feel like eating. Can we go to the gym tonight?" I asked.

"Not tonight Sarah."

"Ok." I whispered as I looked down to my plate.

"I have too many things on my mind tonight. I'm sorry. Would you mind going to bed early?" He asked. I looked up at him. There were so many questions I was hoping to ask him tonight, but he was clearly thinking about his own questions tonight.

"Sure, I don't mind." I told him. I got up and walked to the door. I turned back to look at him again. He was looking down at his plate and was lost in thought again.

After a long bath, I crawled into bed and turned out my lights. I could hear Erik talking on his cell phone in his room. I couldn't hear his words, but his tone was harsh. I'm sure the phone call was related to the events that happened at school today. I closed my eyes and forced myself to fall asleep.

****

When I went downstairs for breakfast in the morning, Mr. Thompson was lost in thought again. "Good morning Mr. Thompson" I said as I sat down to eat my morning cereal.

He looked up at me and tried to smile for me. He wasn't a very good actor today. I could see he was upset by something. "Good morning Sarah, I hope you slept well."

"Yes Sir, I did." I studied his face and he quickly looked away from me. He was hiding something from me.

On our way to school, I kept watching him. "Erik, are you ok?" I asked softly.

He looked at me in the mirror and spoke. "Yes." His face, his posture, his tone, everything about him told me he was not okay this morning. I've never seen him so bothered by something and it made me upset. I didn't like seeing him like this.

When we got to school, I headed off to my new strength training class. I didn't know what to expect. I've never lifted weights before and I hoped I wouldn't make a fool of myself. As we got to the gym Mr. Thompson grabbed my elbow and stopped me. He studied my face then smiled warmly at me. "Don't worry about your new class, Sarah. You will enjoy it. It will get your adrenaline pumping. Trust me." He gave me a little wink and I smiled back at him.

"I do trust you." I said and walked into the locker room to change. He never followed me into the weight room. He stayed out in the gym to wait for me. And like I knew he would be, he was right. I really enjoyed strength training class. It really helped clear my head. Instead of punishing a heavy bag I was punishing my muscles with deep burning; pushing myself to the point of failure. Yes, I really did like this.

After class I walked back out to the Gym with a big smile on my face. Mr. Thompson looked up at me and smiled when he saw my reaction. "Will this be something you would like to do at home with me some time?" he asked.

"Yes." I said simply and started walking to my dreaded Math class. I was doing horrible in math and sitting in the class just made me sick to my stomach. I didn't understand anything Mr. Hill was talking about.

I was so grateful when Math was finally over, but a little nervous about Choir class. I didn't want to see Derrick today. How much of Derrick was Derrick, and how much was Mr. Black? I didn't want to practice with him. The only thing I wanted to do was let Mr. Thompson hurt him. As we walked very slowly to the classroom Mr. Thompson was watching me. "Sarah, are you sure you feel up to doing this today?" he asked.

"Nope, I'm not sure, but I can't let him win. I don't want to be in the same room with him let alone, sing with him." I stopped and faced Mr. Thompson. "In fact the only thing I really want right now is for you to rip him apart into tiny little pieces."

Mr. Thompson started chuckling a very dark laugh. "You have no idea how much I want to do that. It is taking every ounce of restraint I have right now to not kill him in front of all of those students." I smiled at him. I enjoyed knowing he hated Derrick as much as I did right now.

"I don't think anyone would miss him!" I said with a shrug as I started walking to class. He just laughed at me again. At least we were both in a better mood when we entered the classroom.

When we walked through the door of the classroom, Ms. Carlson walked over to us with Derrick trailing behind her. "Sarah, I would like to speak to you and Derrick in the hallway before class today." Then she turned to Mr. Thompson "Erik, if you don't mind could you wait here while we talk?"

"That is not going to happen." Mr. Thompson spoke firmly and his jaw was tight.

She narrowed her eyes on him slightly then put on a very fake smile. "Well if you insist!" She turned and we all walked back out of the door into the hallway. I kept myself as close to Mr. Thompson as I could without touching him.

"Now, there seems to be a misunderstanding between the two of you." My eyes flared as I glared at her. A misunderstanding my ass! "Derrick has assured me, that he did not mean to give you the wrong idea yesterday and he will behave himself. He will act like a gentleman." Derrick was beaming a huge fake cocky smile. My eyes were narrowed on him.

"How can his intentions be misunderstood, when his hand was going up her skirt?" Mr. Thompson fumed at her.

"Well, I did not see anything but Sarah hurting Derrick." She retorted.

I was in a twilight zone. This could not be happening. Ms. Carlson was defending Derrick's actions. "Let me get this straight Ms. Carlson. You want Derrick and me to play nice and pretend yesterday never happened because somehow you believe I was the mean one yesterday? That I was stronger, tougher, smarter and kicked his ass at his own game!" Derrick's eyes flared at me. He thought he was winning, but now he realized this just made me look like the winner in his sick little game. Ms. Carlson narrowed her eyes on me as I stood there with a huge smirk on my face. "That's okay Derrick! This scary little girl promises to play nice and not hurt you again unless, of course, you cross the line."

Mr. Thompson stood with his arms crossed over his chest and he was glaring at Ms. Carlson. His hands were clenched in fists and his knuckles were turning white. Ms. Carlson looked up at Mr. Thompson and her face went to shock, then she tried to put her seductive smile on. He was not biting today. "Well, I guess that's all that needs to be said for now. You two can go practice now." Derrick headed back for the door, but I did not budge. Her body language told me she wanted me to leave her and Mr. Thompson alone, but that was not going to happen. After silently staring at me for a few moments she huffed "Fine" then turned and went back into the classroom.

I turned to Mr. Thompson and waited for him to calm down. After a little while he uncrossed his arms and dropped them to his sides. He looked down at me and smiled. "You handled that very well. He thought he was out playing you, but you turned it around on him. We will have to watch him very carefully."

"Yes we will." I wanted to ask him if he trusted Ms. Carlson but I didn't think he would answer me. Not here. Not now. "Ready?" I asked. He nodded at me and we walked into the classroom.

Melody was watching me and Mr. Thompson very carefully as we entered the room. I gave her a serious look and a tiny shake of the head. Derrick stood on the left of her and I came over to stand to her right. Mr. Thompson walked to the side of the piano and stood facing me. I nodded at Melody to tell her I was ready.

Our singing could have been a lot better, but there was too much tension in the air today. I kept my eyes focused on Mr. Thompson. After our practice was over and it was time for the whole class to come back together, Mr. Thompson grabbed my elbow and escorted me out of the room. He nodded to Ms. Carlson with a stone cold stare as we left the class room. She looked startled but then just nodded back.

Mr. Thompson escorted me out to the car and I got in. When he got in and started driving I raised an eyebrow at him as we left the school grounds. He caught my look in the mirror and said. "Humor me, and eat lunch with me today."

I smiled at him. "I would like that." I was relieved to not have to sit with Derrick. I think Mr. Thompson was relieved not to have to sit with Ms. Carlson. He seemed as upset as I was with her today.

He pulled up to my favorite mom and pop sandwich shop. I loved this place. He easily picked my favorite restaurant of all time.

When we got inside we made our orders at the front counter then went and sat down. "Since you love this place so much, I thought I would try it." He said.

"You've never been here?" I exclaimed with my jaw dropped and completely shocked. I thought everyone ate here. I couldn't believe he'd never been to a local favorite.

"No, I normally only go out for dinner. I'm not too familiar with lunch or breakfast places." He was smiling at me and enjoying my reaction.

"Well, I hope you love it as much as I do! When I was at boarding school, I would get cravings for the Turkey Caboose sandwich. It's the best. Their secret sauce is so good. When they heat the sandwich and the cheese melts with the sauce it is heaven. It's messy, but worth it."

He was starting to chuckle at me. I was getting excited and he found it very amusing. "Okay, I have a serious food issue. I crave really good food and I love to savor every flavor on my tongue." He was still laughing so I stuck my tongue out at him and laughed. "Stop laughing at me, you'll see what I mean."

"Don't you crave really good food?" I asked.

"I guess sometimes, but I don't seem to have this cult like fascination with food that you seem to have." He couldn't stop laughing at me.

I was laughing too. "It's not a cult like fascination, it's a euphoric sensation. Really, really good food can evoke strong feelings." He wasn't laughing quite as hard at me now, but he was amused at my attempt of an explanation. "For example, the feeling I get when I eat Charlotte's three layer heavenly chocolate cake is ... sensual for a lack of another word."

"Sensual?" he asked skeptically. "What does a Turkey Caboose sandwich do for you then?" He was losing his attempt at being serious and started chuckling at me.

"Hmm - The Turkey Caboose makes me over the top happy and reminds me of summer time when you go on long walks in the park where children are playing and adults are engrossed in softball games."

"All of that from one little sandwich?" he teased.

Just then they brought out our sandwiches and drinks. I inhaled deeply and took in the scent. "Mmmm" I said. Erik shook his head at me. "Oh, hush and take a bite." I told him.

I sunk my teeth into my sandwich and fell in love! It was better than I remembered. All the flavors melted together into a oohy goohy madness. I watched as Erik took a big bite then looked at me with big eyes. "See!" I said.

When he finished chewing he said, "Wow that is the best thing I've ever tasted." He seemed surprised. We both ate every last bite of our sandwiches completely stuffing ourselves. Luckily I only got a 6 inch sandwich or I would be hurting. Mr. Big Man ordered a 12 inch and a bowl of soup. We both looked like stuffed turkeys at Thanksgiving time.

"Are you ready for your history class?" Erik asked.

"Not really!" At least I was honest.

Erik laughed at me again, "Come on, let's go."

"If I must! Thanks for lunch, it was perfect!" I told him.

"You're very welcome and yes it was perfect." He said.

Erik got me back to school just in time for class. The next two classes went really well. I liked the new book I was assigned in my Advance English Literature class. The class was already halfway through the book, so I needed to do extra reading tonight to catch up.

When I got home, I went into the South sitting room and logged into the computer. I roamed around the internet for a while before I called Jess. I logged into the video feed early and kept it open, while I looked for music videos to watch.

"Hey, I like that song!" called Jess.

"Hey Jess, I was just looking up videos to watch while I waited for you! How was your day today?" Then I looked at her more closely. "What the hell are you wearing Jessica Lee?" Her black shirt had a V-neck cut so deep it hit her belly button.

"Do you like it? Isn't it sexy?"

"Oh, my God Jess. You cannot wear that shirt." Mr. Thompson walked in the room and looked at me questioning. He must have heard me yelling. "Holy Crap Jess, that shirt leaves nothing to the imagination. How does it even stay in place?"

"Well, some of us don't have chests as large as yours, Sarah. The shirt hangs nicely." She retorted.

"Did you buy that for your college boy toy?" I asked her in very unpleasant tone.

"Yes, and he really liked it tonight. It gave him easy access!" She said with her eyebrows lifting up and down.

"Jess, how the hell am I supposed to protect you, when you wear a shirt that says, 'Hey boys, I'm a hot little temptress, come and get me'." I asked her harshly.

"That's what I was going for, so thanks for the compliment. Besides Sarah, it's quite the fashion statement right now. I bet you would look smoking hot in this shirt!" she said.

"I would need sticky tape to keep it in place!" I replied sourly.

Jess laughed at me. "Yes, you would. Anyway, my boy toy loved the shirt and the fact you can't wear a bra with it. It made for a lot of fun in his car tonight." She said.

"Oh, I'm sure he enjoyed it." I said tartly

"Want to hear what else we did?" I groaned and hit my head on the table. "Come on Sarah, I tell you all my dirty secrets!" she pleaded.

"Fine!" I said sharply.

"So, well his fingers went south of the border and worked their magic on me!" she squealed.

"Jessica Lee Stanley! You did not!" I shouted and scolded her with my tone.

"Oh, yes, I did Sarah and you so do not know what you are missing." She was toying with me and it just made me angrier.

"Oh, yes I do know what I am missing! I know once you cross that line, there is no turning back and you can say goodbye to your virginity. Yes, I am innocent and yes I have never kissed a boy, but I have desires Jessica. I crave for the one I love to hold me, kiss me and touch me in a way that only he can. You have to want to stay pure until you are in love Jess. I'm not saying wait until you're married, just wait until you're in love. Girl, you are moving way too fast. This guy only ever takes you driving in his car. He only wants to have fun with you. I know you're enjoying being wanted, but do you love him?" I responded.

Jess looked sad now and wasn't looking at me. "You're right, we never go anywhere and we never talk about anything. It's only about the making out." She finely admitted sadly.

"I'm sorry Jess. I want you to be happy. I want you to be safe though and not get hurt." I told her.

"I know! That's why you are my best friend." She replied with a weak smile.

"You're mine too. Now stay out of trouble tomorrow and I'll call you tomorrow night!" I said.

"Ok, thanks Sarah. I mean it. Thanks for yelling at me and making me wake up." Jess said.

"I only worry about you Jess." We said goodbye and I hung up.

I hung up and walked over to a chair next to Mr. Thompson. I plopped down sideways, with my legs over the arm. I closed my eyes and rubbed my forehead.

"Did that conversation upset you?" he asked.

"Yes, I'm normally there to keep her out of trouble. She never thinks things through and is extremely impulsive. Her college boy toy is only after one thing with her and he'll have it before the weekend at this rate." I had a huge frown on my face and I was worried about Jess. This guy was a player and she didn't see it. Once he got his conquest, he would dump her and move on to his next one.

"But, she listened to you. You got her thinking about her consequences. I'm not sure she will be going out with this boy again." He seemed so sure.

I looked over at him, "You think so?"

"Yes. You care about her a great deal." He smiled at me.

"Yes, she is more than my best friend. I feel like I'm her sister always trying to keep her out of trouble. Well, we keep each other out of trouble. I've needed her plenty. And you think I'm difficult, you should try watching over Jess!" I laughed.

"Your challenges are part of a different world than hers." He said.

I sighed and slumped deeper into my chair. "Yes, they are." I looked up at the ceiling and started thinking about Derrick and Ms. Carlson. I don't like being forced to be in the same room with him. His games are very dangerous ones and I have to stay alert at all times around him. I don't know willing of a participant he is in Duncan Blacks games. When I'm with the light hearted cocky Derrick, is Duncan always in the background?

"You want to talk tonight don't you?" Erik asked interrupting my thoughts.

I turned back to him, "Yes please."

He nodded, "After dinner, we'll go to the Gym. You should go upstairs and get your homework done before dinner."

"Yes Mr. Thompson." I said with a smile and walked up to my room.

I changed out of my uniform and set my alarm for 6:55pm. Once I start reading, I tend to lose track of time. I lay down on my bed and started reading my English Literature assignment. I finished the first four chapters, when my alarm went off. I quickly ran downstairs to the dining room.

"Did you finish your homework Miss. Townsend?" he asked as Charlotte walked into the room.

"I finished the next four chapters of the new book from English class." I said.

"So you still need to read two more chapters tonight?" he asked.

"Yes Sir." I replied. He nodded his head at me.

Tonight Charlotte made us pot roast, garlic mashed potatoes with pan gravy and some kind of vegetable casserole. It was delicious as usual and I ate every bite. When we were both done, he came over and pulled my chair out for me. We walked silently to the gym together. I followed him into the pool area where he indicated I should sit on a lounge chair. I sat down and curled my legs up under me. He sat down in a chair next to mine as he faced me.

"All right Sarah, let's talk." He said

"Erik, who was in the car with Derrick yesterday? You recognized the person didn't you?" I asked.

"I did recognize the person, but I'm not ready to answer that question yet." He responded.

I looked at him confused. "So it's not against the rules, but you aren't comfortable telling me right now?"

"Yes, I'm sorry." he said.

"Why were you so mad at me the other day, before you abruptly left for the evening?" I asked.

His face dropped and he looked at the ground before he responded. "I'm sorry about that too. I was trying to put distance between us. I didn't mean to hurt you."

I'm glad I was right about that day. I waited a moment for him to return his gaze to mine. "Why did Rebecca want to talk to you alone? Or more importantly why did you let me leave with Derrick?" I asked.

"I have too much to apologize to you for. I don't know why in the hell I let you leave with that little bastard!" Erik's face was pained and pissed off. He paused for a moment. "Honestly Sarah, I don't know what she wanted to talk to me about. She talked about nonsense."

I reached my hand out and held his hand tight. "I'm sorry, but I have to ask. Do you trust her?" He let go of my hand, stood and walked away from me. I didn't mean to upset him so much by my question. He let out a deep sigh while he ran a hand through his hair. "Please forgive me Erik, if I have upset you. Don't worry about it. Don't answer the question. I trust you. That's all that matters."

"Stop being so damned understanding, Sarah!" He said as he turned back around to face me. "I'm not upset with you. I'm never upset with you. I'm pissed off at myself. You see everything and give me too much credit." He looked at me for a long moment before he walked back over to me and took my hands in his as he sat down again. "To answer your question no, not anymore."

"I'm sorry. I know that fact is hurting you." I said.

He raised a hand to my cheek. He was looking so intensely in my eyes, that my heart was starting to beat faster. "We've fought about you, you know!" He was watching my expression change into confusion. "She doesn't understand my, ah, job. She doesn't understand my connection to you. She thinks I am too overprotective and too connected to you. She doesn't understand how you are not a normal eighteen year old girl."

"I like our connection. I trust you with my life." I said sadly and defensively.

He smiled at me. "I know you do and I like our connection also. It's...."

"Calming." I finished

"Yes" he agreed. He looked at me a little puzzled then. "I don't know why that is though. With all the troubles coming at you, at us and all the extra abilities we need to learn to control, I still find myself completely at peace around you."

I smiled at him. "Yes, me too."

"Sarah, we need to be extra careful at school. I think we are being watched. I still don't understand Derrick and Janice's role in Duncan's agenda." He was very concerned.

"Or who else is aligned with them." I added.

"Yes, exactly!" Then he gave a short laugh and shook his head. "You are too observant!"

"I need to thank you." I said.

"Thank me? For what?" he said looking confused.

"Because of your training, I knew how to get Derrick off me. I didn't panic." I explained.

"I hoped you never had to use it, or use it so soon. I'm so sorry I was not there Sarah." He apologized again and he looked upset again.

I squeezed his hand. "I'm fine. I let my instincts take over." We both smiled then I continued. "Please, don't leave my side when I am at school. I think something much darker is coming our way. I can feel it." I clenched his hand tight. As I spoke those words I felt a cold chill run down my back.

Erik moved over next to me then lifted me into his lap. He wrapped his arms tightly around me. "I know Sarah. I feel it too. I will not leave your side. I will keep you safe."

I nestled my head against his shoulder and enjoyed the security of his arms. "Erik, what will we do about my fire power? I'm feeling it more and more. I have to concentrate all the time now to hold it off."

With one hand he lifted my chin so I had to meet his eyes. "Are you feeling it out of control yet?" I shook my head. "Don't worry Baby, we'll figure it out." I stayed cradled in his arms for a long time when he gently pulled me away from him and looked at my eyes. "Don't you still have homework to do?" he asked with a gentle smile.

"Yes, a little reading." I reluctantly admitted.

"Come on let's go back inside!" He stood us up, then grabbed my hand and led the way up to my room. "Goodnight Sarah" he said gently from my doorway.

"Goodnight" I called, as I closed my door. I kicked off my shoes and jeans then plopped on my bed to finish reading my book. I looked at the clock as it was already 10:00pm. I started reading my book and my eyes where getting heavier and heavier. I went back and reread several paragraphs until I closed my eyes for the last time.

***

When I woke in the morning, my side table lamp was off, my book was sitting on the table and I was under my covers. I smiled when I realized Erik had put me under my covers then I blushed realizing how little clothes I had on.

After I quickly got ready for school I raced downstairs for breakfast. Erik had already poured my cereal bowl and had the milk sitting next to the bowl. "Thank you" I said with a smile.

"You're welcome."

When we finished breakfast we hurried out the door. On the way to school, I noticed he kept watching me. Finally he asked, "Did you finish your homework?" He was trying to hide a big smirk on his face.

"No!" I said. He knew very well, I didn't finish it. "Thank you, though." I added and blushed.

He started laughing. "My pleasure!" We let our conversation drop when we pulled into the parking lot.

When I walked from the girl's locker room to the weight room, I saw Mr. Thompson standing against a wall in the weight room. I smiled when I saw him. I was glad he was here. I didn't want to be alone. I didn't know who I could trust anymore. Mel was the only person in this school, who was a friend. He nodded to me when I smiled at him.

I followed Coach Glenn's instructions and I made my way through the circuit. Mr. Thompson was right, I really liked lifting weights. I could focus on the burning and straining of my muscles and tune everything else out. I never paid attention to the boys in the class. I was of course the only girl in the class, but I never made eye contact with any of them. While I was in between machines, I glanced over at Mr. Thompson. He was watching me and his face looked amused. I gave him a questioning look and his face turned into a full smile. I shrugged and went back to lifting. Why does he look so dang happy today? When class was over I headed to the girl's locker room to shower and change.

When I met up with Mr. Thompson in the gym, I asked him "What was so amusing to you? Do I lift too light of weight?" I let a small pout touch my lips.

He laughed and shook his head. "You make the boys nervous. Either you out lift them, or they stumble over themselves watching you. But you are completely oblivious to them." He laughed again.

"Oh, I didn't notice. I sort of zone out when I'm lifting!" I shrugged and started walking to the next class happy he wasn't making fun of me.

"I like that you don't notice them." He said in a low voice before we got to the hallway. I smiled and blushed at him as we walked out the door and a little wave of butterflies hit my stomach. So it's more than Derrick that upsets him. He doesn't like me showing interest in any boy. Interesting!

Math was uneventful and boring. After math we headed to our dreaded part of the day, choir. Without hesitation we walked right in and I went to the piano next to Melody. Mr. Thompson nodded at Ms. Carlson then took his spot next to me by the piano. She looked confused as Mr. Thompson walked past her without saying anything. A few minutes later Derrick walked in and stood to the other side of Melody. He had his charade going full-time today.

"Hey Angel. Hey Mel baby. Are my girls ready to practice?" Derrick asked.

Mel gave her nervous laugh and said. "I'm ready."

They both looked at me and I put on my big fake plastic smile then I said. "I'm always ready."

Mel started playing and I imagined it was someone else singing with me. I remembered Erik's words last night. "We're being watched." So, I never looked at him or Derrick when I sang. I kept my face on Mel or the wall behind the piano. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Mr. Thompson was avoiding eye contact with me and Ms. Carlson. For a very uncomfortable situation, we were both doing very well at pretending we weren't bothered by being there. After our little practice, I followed Mr. Thompson's lead. I didn't know if he wanted to leave early again and wait it out. He came around and sat on the piano bench, leaving enough room for me to sit as well. We both stared blankly across the room and didn't watch anyone in particular.

I let my mind wander while I tuned out the choir practice. When I let me mind relax, I felt the fire burning strong in me. I had been concentrating on so many other things earlier I hadn't noticed it rising up in me. I was getting nervous. With my face straight forward I gently nudged his leg with my hand. He glanced down at my hand, and I slowly spelled "F - I - R - E" in sign language. I only knew the sign language alphabet and I was hoping he knew the basics as well.

His jaw clenched and his body went rigid. We both looked up at the clock. There was still twenty minutes left of class and I needed to stop it now. He nudged my leg and spelled out "A - I - R". I gave a tiny nod and made sure no one in class was watching our silent exchange. We both stared straight forward and I started to focus on the ice-cold burn. There was a power struggle building inside of me and I started to tremble. I gripped the edge of the piano bench as tightly as I could. I turned my head away from Mr. Thompson and the rest of the class as I clenched my teeth. I couldn't let people see the agony taking over me. I started whispering so low, that only Mr. Thompson would be able to hear me over the class singing. "I summon the air. I am the air. Air gives life..." Then I got it. The air came to me and I could push back the fire. There was a light breeze through the room that lightly rustled the paper on the desk and blew lightly through the room. I faced the choir as the breeze hit them. As soon as the breeze hit Derrick his dark eyes darted to mine and someone else from inside him glared at me. I kept his gaze and didn't look away. Ms. Carlson called to Derrick to refocus him, so he had to look away from me. But in that instant I knew my secret was out. He knew it was me, Duncan Black knew it was me. When the school bell rang I quickly walked out of the room to avoid Derrick, Janice and Ms. Carlson. Mr. Thompson was right behind me and Mel ran up to catch me.

"Hey Sarah, you want to sit outside today for lunch? It's a little cold but, it's a nice day." She asked.

"I would love to. That is a great idea." I grabbed her hand and I could see Mr. Thompson's shoulders relax as much as mine did when she suggested we eat outside.

Melody and I took our trays outside to sit on the front steps overlooking the parking the lot. Mr. Thompson went and sat on the railing giving us our space.

"I'm so glad next week is a short week. I'm behind in my Chemistry class." Mel said between bites.

"Short week?"

Mel looked at me like I was an idiot. "Um yeah, Thanksgiving??"

"Oh crap, that's next week?"

Mel laughed at me even more. "Yes, do you have any plans?"

"Actually I don't know. I'm normally not here for Thanksgiving, so I don't know what everyone normally does. I completely forgot." I wondered if Charlotte went to go visit family and what about Mr. Thompson? I doubted my uncle celebrated Thanksgiving.

"Didn't you guys do anything back at your boarding school?"

"Um no, it's normally just a North American holiday. I don't even remember having celebrated a Thanksgiving when my father was still alive."

"Wow, that's just weird." She gave me her warm smile.

"Yeah, I guess it would seem weird. Do you guys normally have a big dinner?"

"Sure, my mom invites everyone over. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandma; you know the whole sha-bang."

"Wow!" I wondered what it would be like to have such a large family to love, worry about, and fight with. I always laughed at the reality TV shows that had families fighting with each other constantly. Somehow I couldn't imagine Mel's family fighting but I had to ask. "So do you have any good arguments with that many people all in the same room, like they show on TV?"

Mel started laughing so hard she choked on her soda. "Not really. Normally our arguments are held under our breaths. My mom did throw a dinner roll at my cousin once, though when he was too rowdy."

"Really?" I laughed along with Mel.

"Oh, hey I forgot. My mom is in New York this week, so we can't do the measurements." She handed me a piece of paper with a body diagram and dotted lines in key measurement spots. "My mom told me to give this to you so you can take your measurements. It's pretty simple."

"Thanks Mel! I'll give it back to you tomorrow in case she is going to work on it this weekend. Did she like your idea?"

"She seemed to like it. She sketched everything out already."

"Cool. I still can't believe your mom is a designer. Do you ever get to give your opinion or ideas on designs?"

"Yeah, once in a while when she is unsure of a certain piece she'll ask me. Most of the time though, she knows exactly what she wants!"

Later that afternoon after I had talked to Jess, I went to find Charlotte. I needed her help with my measurements. I took my sheet of paper with me when I found Charlotte in the laundry room.

"Good Afternoon Charlotte." I called, as I walked into the laundry room.

"Well hello Dear how was school today?"

"The usual. Do you mind if I bother you to help me for a minute?"

"Sure, what do you need?"

"Mel's mom needs my measurements in order to make my choir costume. Can you help me? She sent me a diagram of what she needs." I handed her the sheet of paper.

Charlotte looked over the sheet and smiled. "Sure honey. We need to find a seamstress tape measure first. I haven't used that in years. It should be in the far corner by the sewing machine."

"I'll go hunt for it." I rummaged through several boxes until I found the sewing supplies. "Here it is." I called, as I handed her the tape measure.

Charlotte took my measurements as I wrote them down. "Thanks for helping me."

"You're welcome I needed a break from folding clothes anyway." I smiled at her.

"Charlotte, next week is Thanksgiving. Are you going to go visit your family?"

She stopped and smiled at me. "I was still planning on it. Your uncle gave me the time off before we knew you were coming back."

I avoided the awkward silence. "That's wonderful, are you going to have dinner at your sister's house?"

"This year dinner will be at my niece's house. She lives in Buffalo. We are all flying in for the weekend."

"That sounds wonderful. I hope you have a wonderful visit. I asked Mel today if her family had any of those crazy arguments like you see on TV. She laughed and told me no, but she admitted to her mom throwing a roll at her cousin for getting too rowdy. Do you have any funny stories?"

"Oh heavens yes. I have lots of funny stories. Last year, dinner was at my sister's house and she lives in a small condo. We had to use a couple of old worn out lawn chairs to make sure everyone had a seat. Well they were a little too worn out. My niece's husband fell right through the webbing and got stuck in the frame. We've never laughed so hard."

"Oh, Charlotte that is funny. I can completely picture it." We were both chuckling as she finished up her last measurement.

"Am I interrupting?" asked Mr. Thompson.

Charlotte and I tried to stifle our giggles. "Of course not Mr. Thompson." I replied back to him. He looked amused, so I'm sure he heard our talking.

"I'm finished with the measurements. Let me know if she needs anything else." Charlotte said.

"I will, thanks again for helping." I walked over to Mr. Thompson who turned to leave the laundry room.

He stopped walking once we were in the kitchen. "So, Mel's mom threw a roll at someone during Thanksgiving dinner?" he asked quite amused.

"Yep, do you know Mel's mom." I asked.

"Yes, I know her quite well." His smile was getting wider.

"I take it from your smile that throwing a dinner roll at someone is not her typical behavior."

He chuckled. "Not at all."

"You're going to razz her about this, aren't you?" I asked.

"You bet."

I started laughing at him again. "Besides eavesdropping and getting dirt on Mel's mom, is there something you needed?"

"Yes, I'm sorry. Work is pulling me away for a few days. I will need to leave at noon tomorrow. I've arranged for a driver to take you home from school. Charlotte will still be here Friday and Saturday. I should be back by dinner on Sunday."

"Ok" I said a little stunned that he would be gone for so many days.

"You look puzzled."

"I am a little, but don't worry about it." I was waiting for him to give me extra rules to abide by for the weekend.

"Are you sure you're okay with this?" He looked worried again.

I smiled at him. "Yes, I'll be fine."

"Please don't practice while I am away."

"I promise. Any objections to me going into town?"

"Not as long as you are going alone or with Melody. Your driver is also a protector and will be available all weekend. Just call him to make arrangements." He handed me a business card that contained only a phone number.

"Gee, no blind dates?"

"Not if you ever want to be let out of the house again." he threatened.

I scrunched up my nose at him and barely resisted the urge to stick my tongue out at him. "Somehow, I believe you!"

"Good."
