Book Binding Tape

There are various types of book binding tapes for repairing and reattaching old books. The different types are cloth tapes, clear tape, paper tape, linen tape, etc.
Book Binding Tape
The book binding tapes that are available in the market are generally 1.5" in width. These tapes are mostly used for industrial purposes. The tapes used by professionals in the book binding industry are made from materials that are non-reflective and have a low-gloss finish. Natural rubber adhesive can also be used as a tape for book binding. The double-stitched binder tape is a new type of book binding tape used to cover and reassemble books using a new bone folder.

What is Book Binding?

It is the process of assembling books with the help of sheets made from paper and various other materials. The binding process also involves the activity of enclosing the books with covers, which could be hard back or paper back. The craft or art of book binding has its origins in India. In ancient times, Indians used leaves of the palm to write sutras. The leaves engraved with the writings were bound with the help of lightweight cords or twines. Different communities and countries adopted different means to bind books.

Book Binding Tape

The term book binding tape is used for different materials that are utilized for taping a book; mostly for repairing them. Thus, book binding tape is also known as book repair tape. The tapes used for binding are one-sided tapes, which are generally used in repairing hard back books.

Paper Tape
It is one of the cheapest forms of book binding tapes available in the market. It is mostly used for the purpose of re-attaching the books to a spine and many such repair works. The pages of books that are torn out and separated from the main body are also fixed with these tapes. The pages are thus placed in a proper position in the books with the help of these tapes. The paper tapes are however not suitable to bind or repair vintage or used books.

Cloth Tape
The cloth tape is a commonly used material for book binding. It is mostly used to connect the spine of the book to the hardback cover. The opening and closing of the book becomes easy if it is bound by a cloth tape. In olden times, the repairing of vinyl records was done with the help of cloth tapes. Repair work of the rips along the edges of the records was easily accomplished with the help of these tapes. The cloth tapes not only make the process of binding easy, but also a cost effective process. Colorful cloth tapes that are coated with vinyl are also available in the market.

Linen Tape
The linen tape is similar to the cloth tape, except for the fact that it is perforated, which makes it easy to fold. The linen tapes available in the market are either coated with adhesives or special glues that can be used to bind them to the books.

Clear Tape
The clear tapes are versatile and can be used to bind books and many different types of reading materials. The flexible materials used in making clear tapes allows for binding magazines, comic books and paperback books easily. These tapes are available in varying widths. People use the clear tapes mostly for the purpose of adding a protective coat over magazines and small books.

Duct Tape
Duct tape has various uses. It is used to make many different kinds of accessories, mend many items, and also treatment of warts and other medical uses. As regards to book binding, it is mainly used to reinforce the binding that has already been done originally, but needs some repair.

The book binding tapes have become advanced with the development of technology. Nowadays, the tapes available in the market are not only tough, but also versatile, and most importantly stick well to the material they are bound to.
