Bodybuilding supplements are the supplements that aid the process of building muscles. Read more about these supplements before trying them by reading this article.

Types of Bodybuilding Supplements
The types of muscle building supplements that can be commonly found in the market are, protein or amino acid supplements, creatine based supplements, multivitamin or mineral supplements, glutamine supplements, nitric oxide supplements, thermogenics, weight gainers, growth hormones, methoxy products, prohormones, natural testosterone and anabolic flavones. Out of these, safety of using hormone based and steroid supplements are a bit controversial. In this article, we are going to discuss the effectiveness of those bodybuilding supplements that are usually considered safe, if taken with care and in appropriate dosage.
There are mainly five categories of bodybuilding or muscle building supplements that have been found to be very effective for building muscles. These supplements are amino acid or protein supplements, creatine supplements, essential fatty acid supplements, multivitamin complex and glutamine supplements.
Amino Acid Supplements
Protein is the building block of muscle tissues and amino acid molecules are the basic unit for proteins. Along with taking supplementation, a high protein diet is also important for building muscles. Protein supplements are basically made from four types of proteins, whey protein, egg protein, soy protein and casein. Some protein supplements combine all these four types of proteins and are known as blend or blended protein, while others use only one form of protein. Supplements that contain whey protein are usually taken as post-workout supplements, while supplements with egg protein can be taken any time of the day. Our body digests casein slowly, for which its supplement is generally taken in the night at bedtime.
Creatine Supplements
Creatine is a naturally occurring organic acid, which has been studied widely for its effectiveness in building muscles. This organic acid can be found largely in the muscle tissues and it has been found to be very effective for increasing muscle mass. Creatine also increases the availability of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to enhance the energy level and thus, helps to prolong the workout schedule. Creatine supplements are usually considered as immensely beneficial for people trying to build muscles. However, all supplements may not work for every individual and so exceptions are there in the case of creatine supplements as well. Usually, creatine supplements are taken along with protein supplements to get the best results.
Glutamine Supplements
It is the most abundant amino acid found in our muscle tissues. Glutamine is essential for protein synthesis and it can prevent muscle wasting and improve recovery. However, our body can synthesize glutamine, for which it is termed as a non-essential amino acid. Body builders can take the supplementation of this amino acid for preventing excessive muscle breakdown, as well as for maintaining lean muscle mass and a healthy immune system. If you are considering to take both glutamine and creatine supplements, be sure to take them at different times, as both compete for receptors. Usually, creatine supplements are ideal to be taken as post workout supplements, while glutamine supplements can be taken before workout.
Multivitamin Complex
Deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals can adversely affect your entire body building program. Staying healthy is extremely important while building muscles. In an effort to build strong muscles, the body builders continuously break down their muscles during the workout sessions. This is the reason why, they need more vitamins and minerals to stay healthy and grow strong muscles. Along with following a vitamin and mineral rich diet, they can consider taking supplementation, if they feel that their diet is not providing the adequate amounts of these nutrients. However, vitamin or multivitamin supplementation should be taken with caution and in appropriate dosage, to avoid any kind of health hazards associated with overdose.
Essential Fatty Acids
Despite the negative connotation associated with fats, fats are essential to lead a healthy life. To build muscles and stay healthy, one needs to avoid only the harmful fats such as, trans fats. But, the healthy or essential fats, like, monounsaturated fats and mega-3 essential fatty acids are required in adequate amount to build muscles. In fact, these fatty acids can improve heart and cardiovascular health, besides reducing inflammation of the joints and tissues. The bodybuilders are more prone to get tissue inflammation due to the grueling workout schedule required to build muscles. So, they should consume sufficient amounts of foods that contain essential fatty acids. Foods that contain essential fatty acids are, avocados, nuts, fish, etc. If diet is not providing enough of these essential fatty acids, then they can consider taking supplements.
You can find that bodybuilders are nowadays increasingly using yet another product, known as nitric oxide supplement. Nitric oxide is a gas, which is produced naturally in the body from the amino acid arginine. Nitric oxide increases the supply of blood and nutrients to the muscle tissues. However, presence of excess nitric oxide in the body can lead to the generation of excess oxygen byproducts, which in turn can cause cellular damage. Therefore, moderation is required while taking this supplement. Moderation is important, if you are consuming supplements for muscle building. Again, all supplements may not work for all individuals. In general, whether a muscle or bodybuilding supplement would be effective depends on several factors such as, how much muscle you want to build and within what time frame. The various reviews can help you find out the supplements that can meet your specific requirements. However, be sure to consult your physician, before taking any kind of supplements.
