Bodh Gaya, the revered destination in Gaya district, Uttar Pradesh is one of the four pilgrimage locations for the Buddhists. It is said that Prince Gautama Siddhartha during 500 BC visited the place and gained enlightenment under the shade of the sacred Asvatta tree(Bodhi tree). Buddhist from all over the world visit the holy place and linger on to find ultimate peace in life.

Mahabodhi Temple

Of all the attractions in Bodh Gaya, Mahabodhi temple pulls biggest crowds. This sacred temple dates back to 250 BC and is dedicated to Lord Gautam Buddha, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Its magnificent tower measures about 50m(170 ft) and the fine intricate work, that marks every corner is believed to be of 1880. However, with the passage of time some parts have been renovated. It is said that the temple is a perfect example of Indian brickwork and greatly highlights the influential architectural traditions.

The inner complex of the temple shimmers with a massive statue of Lord Buddha. An ancient Shiv-linga also complement the interior. A beautiful image of Goddess Lakshmi add up to the attractions of Mahabodhi Temple. The sculptured works of elephants, Lord Surya, Sun God, ridding chariot can also be seen.

Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya

To the west of the temple lies the Bodhi tree, which measures about 80 feet in height. It is 115 years old and history says that Emperor Ashoka has constructed a red sandstone slab, the diamond throne, where Lord sat on and attained nirvana. Devotees call it as Vajrasana.

How to reach Bodh Gaya

By Air:
Patna Airport is just 125 kms from Bodh Gaya. One can also opt for flights operated to and form the international airport in Kolkatta(480 kms)

By Road:
The nearest rail head is located in Gaya. The station is well-connected to trains lines from Delhi to Kolkatta

By Rail:
Gaya and Bodh Gaya is 13 km apart from each other. Regular buses and auto-rickshaws help travelers explore the place.
