Dizziness, in simplest words, is defined as a spinning sensation, or feeling faint or lightheaded. It is quite a common symptom experienced by people, due to different reasons in different situations. One may experience dizziness as a symptom of some disease, on consumption of alcohol, etc. Similarly, blurred vision can be caused due to problems in the eye like cataract, myopia or presbyopia, etc. But, experiencing these symptoms together can be an indication of some serious disorder.

Causes of Blurred Vision and Dizziness

As mentioned above, the most common cause of this condition is alcohol consumption. However, there can be a possibility of other underlying diseases or disorders that give rise to these symptoms. Let us know more about it.

Ménière's Disease: Ménière's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can lead to symptoms like loss of hearing and dizziness. You may also experience pressure on the ear if you suffer from this disease. Another peculiar characteristic of this disease is that the symptoms vary from person to person. But vertigo or dizziness is the most common and prominent symptom. Similarly, you should note that any problem related to the inner ear can cause vertigo or dizziness. Inflammation or infection to the nerves in the ear can also cause sudden dizziness or vertigo in people. Although people do not find any difficulty in hearing, they may experience other symptoms like nausea, vomiting or imbalance while walking.

High Blood Pressure / Low Blood Pressure: Sudden increase or decrease in the blood pressure can give rise to symptoms like dizziness and blurred vision. There can be numerous causes like sedentary lifestyle, stress, tension, alcohol, disorders of the adrenal gland and kidneys, sleep disorders, etc., that can lead to hypertension or high blood pressure. On the other hand, hemorrhage, congestive heart failure, reduced blood volume, insufficient fluid intake, bradycardia, etc., can result in hypotension or low blood pressure. Blurred vision and dizziness are the symptoms of both these medical conditions. It should also be noted that these symptoms are observed in children as well as adults.

Migraine: Migraine is a neurological condition which is marked by severe and recurring headache. The exact cause of migraine is not known; but it can trigger off due to reasons like having certain type of food, stress or change in weather. The most prominent feature of migraine is severe throbbing headache which can last for a couple of hours or even days together. Migraine is commonly seen in women than in men. It is often accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, hazy vision and dizziness.

Brain Cancer: Abnormal growth of cancerous cells in the brain results in brain cancer. Sometimes the cells are non cancerous, i.e., benign and are not harmful. Brain tumor is a life-threatening disease and can affect any part of the brain. There are several signs and symptoms of brain cancer, depending on the size and location of the tumor. Blurred vision and vertigo or dizziness are also the classic and indicating symptoms of brain tumor.

Dizziness and Blurred Vision During Pregnancy

Some women also experience frequent migraine during pregnancy which can lead to clouded vision, dizziness, headache, etc. The rise in hormone level can cause dizziness during pregnancy. Although dizziness is commonly seen during pregnancy, it is rarely accompanied by blurred vision. Therefore, if you frequently experience both the symptoms together during pregnancy, it is better to consult the doctor as soon as possible.

Treatment For Blurred Vision and Dizziness

Firstly, the doctor will investigate the potential causes of these symptoms. An X-ray or an MRI are the most effective techniques used to diagnose any underlying disorder. In minor cases, antibiotics can be effective in treating these symptoms. Similarly, herbal treatment, vitamin supplements can effectively cure dizziness. On the other hand, a surgery may even be required in case of a serious condition. Ménière's disease is treated using different treatment methods like medication, use of steroids, surgery, therapies, etc. Blood pressure related disorders can be treated with the help of medication. Secondly, trigger factors of migraine should be identified and avoided as much as possible. Brain cancer is treated using the standard cancer treatment.
