Do Blue Colored Roses Exist?
Yes, they do! Why are we questioning the sheer existence of this beautiful creation that is grabbing our senses in recent times? The only fact is that they are not available originally in nature with that blue mystique, but they are created by us humans. The traditional process of making faux blue roses was done by dyeing white roses in blue. The method of hybridization was used to color the roses with blue color. But all these methods were not so much acclaimed as they seemed less natural.

Genetic engineers from Australia and Japan tried hard to produce blue colored roses in a natural environment. The foremost obstacle in their way was to create delphinidin, an anthocyanin in the rose flowers that will produce that blue pigmentation in the roses. In 2004, thirteen years of research finally gave the scientists a bit of success when they finally inserted the blue color in the plant pigmentation. The scientists cloned the plant pigmentation from the flower 'petunia', into the 'Cardinal de Richelieu, which is a type of rose with bright purple color. Unfortunately, extracts of cyanidin, which is an anthocyanin responsible for the darker shades of flowers, were still causing certain trouble. Currently, with the help of advanced RNAi technology, it has become almost possible to lower the effect of cyanidin in the plant pigments. The scientists are finally successful to produce a subtle mauve to a bluish hue on the roses. The process is still going on with the hope of creating the perfect blue colored rose.
