Blow Dry Hair

Every 2 out of three women blow dry hair. Interestingly, very few of them know the correct technique of blow drying hair.
In the world of deadlines and frantically busy schedules, who has the time to dry their hair naturally, in a cool breeze or mild sunlight? Though most of the hair experts wouldn't approve of artificially drying your hair, most women really cannot do without these methods. Blow drying hair is one of the most popular methods of drying hair. Though, it is believed that this method dries the hair out and damages it. However, this is only because most of the women opting for this method do not know the correct technique of blow drying hair. This article focuses on how exactly you should blow dry hair for optimized benefit and minimized damage.

How to Blow Dry Hair

Before we go into the details of blow drying hair, it is imperative to throw some light on the correct washing technique as well. There is no point denying that blow drying indeed makes your hair dry and frizzy. So, how can you reduce this damage? A good moisturizing shampoo can solve this problem. Moisturizing shampoos render your hair extra moisture to prevent it from drying up. They also keep your hair hydrated during the drying process. Moisturizing shampoos are a must for chemically treated hair. Also, do not forget to invest in a good quality conditioner. Once you have thoroughly washed your hair, you are ready for drying it.

Towel Dry Your Hair
This is the most essential step and you should never skip it. However, the purpose of towel drying hair is only to prevent your hair from dripping water everywhere. Gently squeeze your hair to remove excess water. Now shake it with a towel. Do not rub it vigorously, as it can damage your hair cuticles. Untangle your hair using a wide toothed comb. Divide your hair in sections, depending upon the length and volume of your hair. If you wish, you may also apply hair care products such as a heat protection serum to prevent the damage due to heat.

Adjust the Settings
Most blow dryers these days are salon style and have myriad options for heat and airflow settings. It is best to keep the nozzle on, as it allows the airflow to be directed properly. The best practice of blow drying hair is to keep the heat setting on low and airflow on high. Once, you have got all the adjustments done, plug in the dryer and get ready.

Blow Dry
Let only one section of your hair loose at a time. Tie the remaining ones with a hair clip. Hold the blow dryer about 6 inches apart from your hair and direct the airflow on the roots. Then move downwards towards the end of the hair. Remember, you should never work in the upward motion and it can exacerbate the damage. Also, don't work too much on single area and keep the hair dryer moving. Do not completely dry your hair, leave it a little damp so that it can dry naturally within minutes. Proceed to the next section and repeat the same procedure. If your hair is very short you may start from the nape and then move towards the crown.

Some Tips for Blow Drying Hair
  • If you want to blow dry hair straight, direct the cold airflow on your scalp to add volume to your hair. Also, working upon your hair in downward fashion helps the cuticles to lie flat, so that you get that sleek look.
  • If you want to blow dry your hair wavy, then comb your hair with a brush and twist it. While the hair is still damp, direct the blow dryer on the twisted section with a high heat setting. Work upon this area for some time before going for the next section.
  • If you want to blow dry them smooth, apply some anti freeze serum on your locks, after blow drying it. Alternatively, you may also apply a few drops of olive oil for that natural look.
You may choose to blow dry your hair, if you are short of time, or if you want to add some style. However, if you can manage it, always dry your hair naturally under the fan, in the breeze or in the morning sunlight. Natural techniques enhance the growth of your hair and have no potential to damage the hair.
