Blood Slave: David the Giant (Chapter 3)

The giant.
I could smell baking bread and the musk of animals, when I woke. My eyes were still closed but I knew I wasn’t lying by the river anymore. I rolled onto my side and moaned. I could feel scratchy sheets underneath me and a feather pillow under my head. "Miss? Are you awake?" I heard a man say. My drowsy emerald eyes opened to see a brute of a human sitting beside me. I gasped and sat up quickly, which immediately made me yelp in pain. "Calm down miss. I won’t hurt you."

He exclaimed holding his hands up, as if to show me he was harmless. I settled down a bit, and held my hurting wrist. It was bandaged up. "Lie down now. You’re hurt. You took a wild ride down those rapids. Your wrist isn’t the only thing bandaged up." He said softly. I looked down at myself. Almost every part of me was wrapped up, and I noticed I was wearing a man’s shirt. I picked at the raged thing. "Sorry about the clothes miss. It’s all I had." He apologized. I nodded. He grinned at me and stuck out his hand. "I’m David. And you are?" I frowned at his hand; I wasn’t sure what to do. I was confused by this strange creature. All the humans I had ever encountered were thin, silent, tagged, and caged. This human was a thick monstrous being. He was not caged, he had no collar, and he was speaking quite loudly. "You’re supposed to shake it."

He laughed. I slowly took his massive hand in mine and shook it vigorously. I opened my mouth to tell him my name, but only, "Ahhhh…" came out. "Can you speak miss?" He asked. I nodded, but I looked unsure. I tried again. "Ahhhhh..mmm ruurrzz." I gurgled. "Are you trying to say Rose? Is your name Rose?" He asked. I nodded excitedly. "Good. Where are you from?" He asked. I wasn’t sure how to answer.

If I had my collar on, he would know where I came for and what I was the second found me. But I didn’t have anything to identify me. I lowered my head. "You don’t have to tell me. It’s ok. Just rest. I’ll get some food for you. You’re gonna have a long night anyway. Have I got news for you Miss. Rose. " He said ominously, as he walked over to the stove. I laid back on the hard hay filled bed and I watched him pull out a tray of bread and meat. He brought the tray over to the bed and set it in front of me. Then he grabbed a basin from the floor and poured a glass of water. "Here you go. Eat up." He smiled.

I tentatively reached for the food. I had never seen a meal in this form. It looked heavenly. "It’s moose meat and sweet bread. You’ll like it." He told me. I picked up a piece of bread and a little bit of the meat. The meat was slick between my fingers. I squinted at it. "Go on then." He urged.

I nibbled a tiny bit of each. An explosion of flavor emanated my mouth! "Mmmmm…!" I squealed. "See? It’s great." He grinned. I stuffed them both in my mouth, and then began shoveling in the rest. It was the best thing I’d ever tasted! I felt like crying with joy, from the effect of this blissful thing!

"Hey now! Slow down, you’ll make yourself sick!" David yelled, grabbing my hands. My cheeks were full and I looked at him wide eyed. I assume, I looked something like a chipmunk. He had a puzzled look on his face as he stared at me. I didn’t move. We were both frozen. Then he said, "You’re not from around here, are you?" I didn’t answer. He let go of me, and sighed. I began to wonder, (Did I do something wrong?) He looked at the ground. I swallowed and attempted another sentence. "Ahhh..mmm a saaavv." His head jerked up. "What did you say?!" He asked. I gasped at his sudden movements.

"I’em a saavv." I said again, slowly. "A slave?!" He exclaimed. I nodded. He jumped up, and began pacing. "Oh Lord no, oh no, oh no, oh no!" He was yelling, throwing his massive hands in the air. I pulled the blanket up to my nose. He was scaring me. He stopped pacing and pointed at me.

"You’re saying that you’re a runaway slave! A runaway slave that’s about to turn vamp!" He yelled.

The last part was more to himself. I didn’t know what to say. "A vampire bit your wrist. If a vampire bites a humans wrist or neck, they will turn into a vampire too! Who bit you?!" He asked. I swallowed hard and looked at my arm. "Leeerrda Saaamita." I slurred. "Lerd? Lerd….." he pondered, trying to decode my sentence.

"Lord!? You’re a slave to a lord, and he bit you!? Lord…Samita? Smit? What was the last name?" He asked.
"Samita..." I breathed quietly. I was becoming very frightened.

He put his finger to his temple."Sssss…mmm. Smit…Smitaaa…" He frowned.

Then I saw his face come to realization. "Smith! Lord Smith!" He roared.

I ducked under the cover. "Oh lord!" I heard him moan. I whimpered. Everything he was saying was coming out too fast and too loud. (He said I was going to turn into a vampire! He’s going to send me back to my master.) I thought. Tears came to my eyes. The cover was ripped away from me and I curled into a ball.

"Miss I’m sorry. I won’t yell anymore." He whispered, crouching beside the bed. "Don’t cry." He hissed, resting his hand on my arm. I uncurled and looked at him. "I’m going to be in a lot of trouble if they catch you here. I’m just a little afraid is all. I’m going to have to find you a new place to stay tomorrow." He told me. I nodded weakly. "Ok then. Well, go back to sleep now. Rest doll." He mumbled. I rolled onto my stomach and closed my eyes. He pulled the covers over me and I settled into a fit full sleep. The nightmares came on so fast that at first I didn’t know I was dreaming.

I was lying on Lord Smith’s bed and I was in a panic. The room was all in shadows. I was stuffed into a long, red, silk dress. In the darkness a pair of large, orange, glowing eyes peered out at me. I tried to stifle my scream, and something pricked my lip. I was shocked. I put my hand to my mouth and pricked my finger as well. Suddenly a mirror appeared before me and I could see my bleeding mouth. I opened my mouth and gasped. I had fangs! Tears of blood poured from my eyes and a fist came through the mirror at me! I screamed and jumped off the bed.

Stumbling away, I heard an evil voice, "Little Rose." It chuckled. It was Lord Smith’s voice. I stopped and stood stark still. A hand grabbed my arm and turned me around. But no one was there. Just black empty space. I frowned at the nothingness. Suddenly my master exploded out of the darkness, his orange flashing eyes burning holes in me and his fangs bared for the bit. I screamed myself awake.

I was in and out of sleep all night. One time when I woke up David said something about me having a fever, and I was profusely sweating and in extreme pain. He dabbed my head with a wet cloth and force water down my throat, which made me think I was back in the river drowning, so I vomited twice.

The next evening I woke, David kneeling beside the bed. His eyes were closed and he was quickly hissing under his breath. I sat up and watched him. "Daavid.." I said. He looked up at me. "Oh, thank God!" He cried. I smiled. He stood up. "I thought you were going to die!" He told me grimly.

"You’re starting to turn. You tried to bit me." He sighed. I frowned with concern, but he just smiled back. "Anyway, on a lighter note, while you were asleep I went out to talk to some friends. I found a good home for you. My friend Patrick Colton will take you in. He doesn’t know you’re coming yet. But he’ll be ok with it. He’s a vampire too and he can help you." My chest became tight at the word vampire. He pulled in his lips and looked at the ground.

"I know you’re scared, but he is very kind. He wasn’t always a vampire, you know…but his..." he stopped short. "No time for that. He can tell you if he wants. Do you want some bread and jam?" He asked cheerfully. I nodded. He prepared my meal quickly. I compared it to yesterday’s meal. It wasn’t as appetizing.

As I ate he walked in and out of the house. I’m not sure what he was doing. Then he brought me a new shirt to put on and he brushed my hair. "Ok Miss. Rose, are you ready to go meet Patrick?" He asked. I nodded nervously. He grinned at me.

David picked me up and carried me outside. He sat me on the ground near the house. The bright light in the sky wasn’t there. It was the dark indigo night that hung over my head. David walked over to the small building beside the house, and he came back with a horse. I knew horses. Lord Smith had taken me riding once. That was the one thing I had enjoyed doing with him.

"Hoorass." I hissed. He nodded. "Yep, we're gonna ride him to Pat’s house." He told me. Then he picked me up and helped me on to its back. He climbed on behind me, and with a sudden jolt we were off. We raced through the woods, inching ever closer to Mr. Patrick Colton’s house.
