Blood Skye-1
Zombies? Love? Death? What more can I say?
I closed my eyes, tears escaping and clinging onto my long dark lashes. The year is now 2021 and the sky that had once been bright and blue is now red. Its like the dead bodies had they’re blood drained and somehow appeared in the sky. The blood sky. I laugh at how ironic that is, the blood sky and I am Skye Avery.
Just then, a voice interrupted the stillness of the afternoon. "Skye, we have new civilians coming in five minutes and a dozen of those things are chasing after it. We need you down here on the double."
I unlatched the walkie-talkie from my shorts. Trying to calm my breathing. "On my way." I replied and ran into bedroom to grab my pistols. I put in a new round and clicked it shut. My silver pistols were my best friends. I took them everywhere with me. The two pistols on the corner of the base had my initials, or my old initials. S.A.
I ripped out my hair binder from my hair letting my dark curls free. They laid wild and shiney and stopped in the middle of my back. I walked down the long corridor to the stairs. People were crowding the windows to get a better look at the truck that would be bringing in the new civilians. The ones that were being chased by a dozen dead bodies waiting to rip out they’re throats.
I gripped my pistols tighter and started running down the stairs to the garage. I burst through the door to see ten men loading they’re guns and grabbing swords and knives for hand to hand combat. I grabbed a katana and put it in my back strap to easily grab if one of those things were coming at me. I went up to a bigger man. His hair was starting to recede and turn gray. He was about twice my age but yet he was my husband Henry.
He smiled at me walking towards him on a mission. He liked that about me, I was always ready to go. "Dear wife I see that your ready." He smiled at me. I just looked at him and stared with my eyes that some say reflected my soul or who I was. Scary. One eye was a deep ocean blue while the other one was as green as the grass that once was.
I looked towards the garage door. For some reason I married this idiot. I don’t even know how Sargeant Williams talked me into marrying him. If I wasn’t going to be with Ender then I didn’t want anyone and if they were going to throw me at someone it might as well had been Drew Thomson. A good friend of mine. He was really tall about 6"3. He had short light brown hair with the brown eyes. I shrugged away my thoughts, now was not the time. "How many?" I asked not taking my eyes off of the garage door.
"Twenty of the dead has been counted and about thirty civilians in two different trucks." He replied not taking his eyes off of me. I tensed up for a second worried about the team feeling like we weren’t going to win. I saw Henry staring at me with questioning eyes but I quickly regained myself. It was a risk they were willing to take.
"Alright people lets get a move on they’re at least 200 feet away!" A man in an army uniform demanded. His name was Sargeant Williams. "Skye get over here for a second."
I went to go stand besides the Sargeant. His dark skin was covered in sweat. He was just as nervous as I was. "Listen, I noticed how you were looking at Henry. Skye I know you didn’t want to marry him. I know that you wanted to stay with Ender but Ender has been gone for almost three years now. There is a big chance that he will never come back. You will do whats best for the world. We don’t have many humans left. We need more Skye! It has come to my attention that you won’t bed him."
I stared up at the sarge disgusted. "I won’t because I don’t love him! You’re the one that thought it would be best for our community if you wed off all the woman to produce babies but I will not lay with someone I don’t love." A tear escaped my eye and I quickly wiped it away before anyone could see. There was no time for crying in this world. It is true that Ender has been gone for quite some time but that was because it was my fault. I had believed that my brother was still alive in Florida and Ender went to go search for him. I turned from the sargeant. "Lets just get this over with." I spat and walked in front of the garage door waiting for it to open.
Sargeant Williams signaled the man by the switch who turned it up and opened the garage. As soon as it was open enough to crawl through I rolled through the open space under the garage and stood up looking out towards the desert. We have been stranded here for thirteen years and everything was drying up. The world was almost completely dry all that was left were a few oceans and the building that they built themselves in the middle of no where. Yet we were still being hunted.
I heard rumbling and screeches. I ran straight ahead my boots covered with the desert sand. We all had to be quick. I ran up a sand hill and saw the two trucks and passed the trucks were at least twenty zombies trying to catch up with it. "They are fast." I mummbled to Drew who was now besides me. "Those fuckers never give up." He grummbled.
I ran ahead towards the horde of zombies. Usually I was running away but now it was my time to fight them off before they arrived at the complex or succeeded in catching up with the trucks. I was tired of the lives that were being taken away. This was going to end.
Two men with snipers moved to the top of the hill and layed down on they’re stomachs aiming towards the zombies. The zombies were quick but luckily they were moving straight ahead instead of criss crossing. The snipers could take a few down before we caught up to the rest.
"Twenty more feet." I grunted and pushed myself harder ignoring the aching muscles in my legs. "Fifteen." The high pitch screeches coming from the zombies mouths were unberable. The noise stunned me for a moment. I saw a blonde female with her arm cut off and blood running from her mouth run towards me. "Two." I gripped the katana on my back strap and swung it towards the creatures neck cutting it off cleanly. I stepped onto the head to make sure it was dead as it splattered onto my shoes and the desert sand. I took the two pistols from the gun holders on my legs and shot two male zombies running towards me flailing they’re arms all over the place in the head.
I was growing tired now. The humidity of the desert was getting to me now the sun boaring down on my skin as if it wanted to burn me alive. My mouth tasted sour of saliva wanting to chug a cold glass of water to run down my throat. My body tightened as I waited for another zombie to come to me. Its dangerous to run to them.
I heard a sickening cry coming from someone, I turned towards the noise seeing two zombies jump on a man, Michael Louis, about thirty years old. He clenched his teeth as they buried they’re teeth into his arms and his shoulders. Blood trickled out of his mouth. I ran towards him and pulled out my katana slicing the heads off of the two zombies. I looked down at Michael who was eaten alive. His eyes were open wide in terror and pain, he wasn’t breathing. I knew he was going to turn soon. They always turned. I pulled out my pistols and aimed it at his head, "Sorry." I whispered so only he could hear. Michael, or what was once Michael, sat up and looked at me with a confused expression on his face, his eyes were completely dialated. He let out a scream as I shot him right between the eyes.
"Well done people. Lets go back to the complex." Sargeant Williams commanded. I looked around and saw the bodies of the dead and counted two that had been apart of our group. Henry stood beside me gazing out towards the desert. "You realize that wasn’t as bad as we had thought." He said to me. I nodded and placed the pistols in my gun holder.
"I do realize that but it doesn’t change the fact that they’re dead." I said turning back to look at the bodies that were burning in a pile.
"You can’t save everyone Skye." Henry pointed out to me putting his hand on my shoulder.
"I can try." I said shrugging off his hand and walking back to the building. I saw the truck unloading the new civilians and I felt a wave of relief pass through me.
I turned around when I heard a low grunt coming from Henry. I saw him pull down his sleeve.
"Are you alright?" I turned around to face my husband.
"I’m just fine. Don’t worry about me. Just, out of shape." Henry replied. His face was casual, cool. But his eyes were in pain, deep. Men aren’t good liars.
I kept walking towards the building believing him a little. He was a bit overweight. I didn’t even know why Sargeant Williams brought him out on missions like this, he was going to get Henry killed. I shook my head. I didn’t love Henry but I didn’t want him dead either.
I walked into the garage looking at the new civilians. I counted thirty-four and stopped over-whelmed.
"We’ll need to go on a raid soon." A tall muscular man about my age towered over me. Drew.
"Figured as much. We’ll go tomorrow night." I told him glancing at a girl about four years old clutching at a womans hand. Possibly her mom, most likely not.
"Listen, Skye. I wanted to ask.." Drew was interrupted by a shout from across the room.
"Skye!"
I looked across the room finally starting to empty out of the new arrivals. I gasped. My knees buckled beneathe me and I fell to my knees gasping for air. My heart was squeezing in my chest making it hard for air to pass through my lungs. I was numb. I didn’t even feel the thirst that had me gagging a few minutes ago. I heard his footsteps coming towards me and saw his white Nike sneakers in my view. I felt his finger cup my chin and lift up my face so I was staring right at him.
The handsome man looked into my eyes. His short dark hair almost covering his eyes. He was tall, taller. His arms were muscular instead of skinny. He pulled me to my feet and hugged me tight. I hugged him back not wanting to let him go. We sat there hugging for what seemed like forever until I heard a clucking sound behind me and a cough.
"Excuse me but you are?" I heard Drew say from behind me.
I felt him put his arm around my shoulder but he put out his other arm in a hand shake. "I’m Jake Avery." He said smoothly, "Skyes brother."
