Blood- Pt4 - Dr. Whitten
Sorry I took so long, things got a little crazy. Zaia meets the scientist who created the bloods.
DR. LARRY WHITTEN’S POV
I could do nothing but cower under my desk as the largest blood I had ever seen crashed through a section of the wall to get into my lab. This one was eleven feet tall and absolutely terrifying. I backed up farther until my back hit the wall. Its head moved from side to side and it’s beady red eyes roaming the room as it searched for its target. I held my breath and kept absolutely still when its eyes started to look in my direction. It sniffed at the air and took a step closer. My heart was racing; it was so loud that I was sure that it would give me away.
Its tail lashed out and turned my desk into rubble, leaving me trapped under it. I could not see it anymore but I heard it ripping the place up. By the time it was done I was positive that everything was destroyed. I was still thinking that it was going to kill me when I heard it thunder through another wall and tear away. I waited at least an hour before I tried to dig my way out from under my destroyed desk. I managed to open a small air hole before I got too tired and collapsed.
"Oh my gosh! Marc, look at that wall!" A female’s voice floated into my hiding space. "What wall?" A deep male voice-Marc- said in response. "That’s my point!" The female said in frustration. "Are you sure this is the right building? It looks like a bomb went off in here." The female demanded. "Yeah, this should be it... Do you think anyone was in here?" Marc replied quietly. "I hope not. I don’t think anyone could survive through this...The only thing left is the freaking door!" There was a moment of silence. "Zaia..." Marc said slowly. By his tone I thought that it sounded like he finally understood what happened. "Yes?" The female-Zaia-sounded closer now. "What can you think of that can cause this much damage without using a door?" I peeked out of the hole to see two teens standing close to what used to be my desk. Zaia’s eyes widened in shock or fear, I could not tell. "You think a blood got in here?! Oh my! Do you think Dr.Whitten’s okay?" She sounded worried.
"Help!" My voice came out raspy and quiet but they heard it. "Marc!" She grabbed his large arm. "What?" "Someone is in here! Where are you?" She called out. "I’m in here." I managed to whisper. I poked a finger out through the hole so they might spot me. "Hold on a sec, we’ll get you out." She whispered something to Marc who whispered back.
"Zaia?" A new male voice rang out through the room. "Chase! What are you doing here?"
ZAIA BAILY’S POV
"Zaia?" I turned even though I already knew who it was. "Chase! What are you doing here?!" He spoke slowly as he took in the mess around us. "I work here. I am Dr.Drew’s assistant." "Oh well I guess we can talk later. I need your help." I walked closer to the destroyed desk. "With what? You are not asking me to clean this entire mess up are you?" He asked suspiciously. "Teenagers!" I heard the voice beneath the desk mutter. "No! Just help me move this!" Finally he understood and helped me and Marc move the destroyed chunks of desk.
A short, thin man with messy, curly, white hair and broken glasses crawled out and sat on the floor. It was Dr.Whitten. He was the reason that bloods existed. He created the bloods by accident one day while experimenting with genes. I really wanted to talk to him because he knew more about bloods than anyone else did. We humans had a limited understanding of the predators that we cower from.
The most that has been learned so far (besides what you already know) is that one: they are bulletproof, two: explosives don’t harm them either and three: the only way for a human to kill it is in hand to hand combat. I even found a few sweet spots that really slow them down. Most are terrified of them but others think it is a good thing humans have finally met their match. I am not with either of those groups. I am on my own... being what I am; I will always be on my own.
"How are you still alive?" Chase asked incredulously. That old scientist looked up at him. "It saw me. It knew I was there but it was not interested in eating me. It came in, trapped me then destroyed the lab." "But bloods are always hungry, they..."
"NO!" Dr. Whitten shrieked then jumped up and begun searching through the rubble that once was his lab. "It’s gone, it’s gone! Dammit!" "Uh...Dr. Whitten?" I asked uncertainly. "I was working on a project that could heal them." "Whaaat?" Marc asked. He was completely lost. "I was trying to find a way to fix my mistake. I originally was trying to revive an ancient species that has been extinct for millions of years. I was not expecting them to be so wild and blood thirsty. And so damned smart!" We all stared open mouthed at him. "Waaaiit...You’re saying that you made these monsters on purpose!?" Marc’s voice cracked. "I was trying to revive an ancient species. Some live DNA was found, perfectly preserved. I spent half of my life working on this, only to have it backfire on me when I finally got it right!" The old man shook his head.
"You said you were trying to heal them?" I asked. He nodded. "Why? And how?" "It is not very logical to go out and kill every blood there is, that would be like trying to kill every bug on the planet. So I figured that I would find a way to tame them. If I could find a way to calm their ravenous appetite even in the slightest bit, they could stop slaying humans. As for the how; I am trying to rearrange their genes so that their appetites are dampened somewhat. It is very difficult to know which part is which so it has taken a very long time. The mixture that has disappeared is the closest I have gotten to find the cure." I was about to say something but the police had arrived. Things were about to get a little crazy.
**I hope this chapter was not too boring.
