Ulcer is commonly known as the sore or boils on the skin. In medical terms, ulcer is the cut on the mucus membrane, which is nothing but a thin tissue that lies on the inner surface of the skin openings. There are many causes of ulcer. Important among them are integrity loss on the area, bacterial or fungus or viral infection of the part, general weakness of the affected person and late healing process. Ulcers normally affect the digestive part of the system. Depending upon the area of the digestive system where it is affected, there are different types of ulcers. They are
1. Gastric ulcers
2. Duodenal ulcers
3. Peptic ulcers.
Gastric ulcers occur in the stomach. Duodenal ulcers affect the upper part of small intestine nearer to stomach. Upper digestive tracts are affected by peptic ulcer.
Bleeding ulcers
The peptic ulcer should be treated immediately as it affects the inner lining of the stomach or the small intestine. If treatment is delayed, it may lead to bleeding internally. The bleeding type of peptic ulcers is known as bleeding ulcers. Some common symptoms of bleeding ulcers include loose stools in black and tarry colour having abdominal cramps, blood vomiting which is in bright red or coffee-black colour and indigestion pain having nausea or burning sensation in the heart, indigestion and abdominal pain.
The pain that is caused in bleeding ulcers depends up on the stomach acid. More often than not the blood acts as a cushion and decreases the pain. So there is a possibility that bleeding ulcers may not cause that much pain in some cases. Sometimes the person having bleeding ulcer becomes anemic. This is because the bleeding ulcer may get increased and enter a blood vessel, leading to hemorrhage. In such situations the death of the person becomes inevitable
Ulcer Symptoms
The symptoms of ulcer, depend upon the type of ulcer, you are afflicted with. A person affected by gastric ulcer feels indigestion and heartburn. He also loses weight. The pain is very much aching and intermittent with loss of appetite.
Heartburn, stomach pain, weight gain and the feeling of burning sensation are some of the symptoms for duodenal ulcer. About 20% of the affected person suffers from peptic ulcer. There is no symptom for peptic ulcers. Some complications are developed at some point of time during affected period. The common complications are hemorrhage, penetration, perforation and obstruction
Hemorrhage
It is a situation of continuous bleeding. The anemia condition which is result of hemorrhage leads to a situation of tiredness or weight loss of the affected person and sometimes death also. About 6 to 10% of such cases die due to loss of blood.
Penetration
When the ulcer spreads to some other adjacent organ then it is said to have penetrated. For example the liver or pancreas may get affected sometimes. The spread of the ulcer to the lower back is marked by sever pain.
Perforation
When a hole is created on the wall of the stomach or intestine then it is called perforation. It is identified by sever pain, fever and the abdomen becoming tender.
Obstruction
Persistent presence of ulcer can lead to the formation of scar tissue, which may block the way between stomach and duodenum resulting in the non-movement of food to the digestive system. This condition is known as obstruction.
Symptoms of bleeding ulcers
Actually, the advanced stage of peptic ulcer leads to bleeding ulcer. When the untreated peptic ulcer starts bleeding then it is called bleeding ulcer. Excrements from the body in black and tarry color is one of the common symptoms of bleeding ulcer. Added to it the patient vomits blood which is bright red or black (coffee) in color. Pain due to indigestion is another symptom for bleeding ulcers,
A goal or career oriented or pressured person is normally compared to the situation of ulcer. But the disease of ulcer is not a laughing matter. It has to be taken very seriously. Excessive use of aspirin, smoking, coffee, Tea leads to ulcer.
