Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius Charged with Murdering His Girlfriend

Olympic sensation Oscar Pistorius, better known as The Blade Runner, was arrested and charged in South Africa with the shooting death of his girlfriend in his home.
30-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed in the home of Oscar Pistorius two nights ago and South African police have arrested Pistorius and charged him with pre-meditated murder in her death. Officials believe that Steenkamp and Pistorius were in the midst of an argument when he shot her multiple times. Police who arrived at the scene said that Steenkamp was found in a bathroom with Pistorius sitting nearby.

Steenkamp had been shot in the head, hand, chest and pelvis. There were also bullet holes through the bathroom door. It is believed that she was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors said that they heard noises coming from the home in the moments leading up to the murder and Pistorius and Steenkamp are believed to have had several domestic issues at the home in the past.

Pistorius is known on the international athletics scene as The Blade Runner, a double amputee who was born without bones below his knees. Pistorius runs on a pair of blade-like prosthetic limbs, which are the inspiration for his nickname. Pistorius qualified and ran in the 2012 London Olympics, but failed to medal.

He makes millions annually from a slew of endorsements with various brands, including Nike and British Telecom giant BT. Pistorius appeared in court this morning to face the official charges and he was visibly shaken and sobbing as the judge addressed him.

At this point, no alternative explanation has been offered for Steenkamp's death and most observers now believe that Pistorius shot and killed her. Given his status in South Africa as a national hero, it will be very interesting to see how their legal system handles this troubling situation.
