Bladder infection, or the urinary tract infection, is a bacterial infection mostly caused by the bacteria E.coli. The urinary tract consists of kidneys, ureters, bladder and the urethra. Infection in any of these organs is the urinary tract infection (UTI). Although the exact cause is unknown, this infection is found to affect more females than males. However, males can also contract this disease. Most of the time, the infection originates in the urethra and then as the bacteria multiply, they spreads to other parts of the urinary tract.

Bladder Infection Symptoms
The prominent symptoms of bladder infection include painful urination and burning sensation while urinating. Pain in the pelvic bone or cramping or spasms are the typical symptoms of bladder infection in women. In case the infection has spread in kidneys, other symptoms like abdominal pain, back pain, fever, chills, nausea, frequent urge for urination, etc. are also observed. Chills, fever, fatigue and groin pain are some of the general signs and symptoms of bladder infection, which may or may not be observed in some adults. In case of children, the symptoms are not that precise and hence, it is difficult to diagnose the condition. General symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, crying, loose motions and irritability are the symptoms of bladder infection in children.

Treating Bladder Infection
If one observes any of the above mentioned symptoms, he must consult the doctor as bladder infections can be treated quickly if not followed by any further complications or obstruction. Antibiotics are effective in treating bladder infections. If the infection is diagnosed in the early stages, it can be cured within 1-2 weeks with doses of antibiotics. However, in case the infection has reached to an advanced stage, like the kidney infection, a longer dose of antibiotics, or hospitalization is also required. On the other hand, there are certain natural remedies for bladder infection.

Natural Remedies for Bladder Infection
Cranberry juice is the oldest and the best option considered for treating this condition. Cranberry juice acidifies the urine which makes the bacteria find it difficult to live on the cell wall. Hence, the spread of the bacteria can be controlled. Cranberry juice is also used to prevent bladder infections. However, one must be careful that it is a pure and 100% cranberry juice. One can also get cranberry pills or capsules as a substitute for the juice. Secondly, 'uva ursi', also known as bear berry, is used as a natural remedy for urinary tract infections since a long time. This herb contains tannins that help in fighting the infections. Uva Ursi was used as a remedy for treating bladder infections before the antibiotics were discovered. Acidic foodstuffs like garlic, cashew nuts, marshmallow, spinach, papaya, etc. can also help in reducing the spread of bacteria and hence, treating urinary tract infections.

Urinary tract infection can be prevented by maintaining hygiene and following good food habits. One should avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes and also avoid excess intake of caffeine and alcohol. On the other hand, both men and women should keep the genital regions clean. One should remember that drinking adequate amount of water is one of the best method for bladder infection cure and prevention.
