This article contains the secrets to the mouth-watering blackberry pies. Yes, the secret is the blackberry pie filling. So read on to find one of the simplest and the tastiest blackberry pie filling recipe.
My grandma makes the most yummy blackberry pies ever. For years, I have been coaxing her to tell me her secret ingredient, and just like 'Po' from the Kung fu panda fame, I realized that there is no secret ingredient. It is love and affection that makes these pies seem like out of this world. To the rest of us, who weren't gifted with magical fingers that chefs have, this is our secret ingredient, aside from love and affection, of course. This filling recipe is guaranteed to at least make some mouths water.

Filling Recipe From Scratch

Before we get to the pies one must know how to make the filling for the pie. This recipe is for a twelve inch pie and is very simple.

Ingredients
  • Three and a half cups of blackberries
  • Two cups of Sugar
  • Three tablespoons of Cornstarch
Preparation

To prepare the filling, you can either pick the berries from the wild, which will be a lot more exciting or you can just go to your local store and buy some frozen berries as well. So after you have the berries with you, wash them well under running water and place then in a stainless steel pot. Add some water and sugar and set to simmer. Meanwhile, mix the cornstarch in some cold water till it dissolves completely. Keep stirring the berry mixture to prevent it from sticking to the bottom, make sure that the sugar is completely dissolved. Then add the cornstarch and simmer for a while. So there you go, the simplest pie filling is prepared.

Some Tips

To make the rest of the pie is quite tricky, you need an oven that should be preheated to 400 degrees. You also need to either make the pie crust or buy one. Pour the berry mixture in the pie crust and coat the top of the filling with butter, add another layer of the crust on top of the pie to seal the filling inside. Make small hole in the surface and sprinkle some sugar over it. Then put it in the oven and let it bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Once it is done, remove the pie and set it to cool before you refrigerate it. Serve the pie with some ice cream or whipped cream, and set those mouths watering. Wasn't this the easiest of all the pie recipes?

You can add lemon zest to the mixture of boiling berries. Buttering the pie crust also helps in baking the pie well. Don't forget to thaw the berries before you get to making the pie. The best thing about blackberry pies is that one can mix in so many other types of fruits to truly make a mouth-watering treat. You can add some vanilla beans or strawberries or blueberries. Better still just make a 'very berry pie' with every possible berry. Although then you will have to make sure the sugar is right because berries tend to be tart.

Cooking can be a good way to spend some time with your mom or grand mom, and moreover, this is a good way to impress your mom-in-law. Other than that, a good dessert always makes any dinner a success, so give your friends and family the best culinary treat ever. Get into that kitchen and let the aroma of a freshly baked blackberry pie fill the air.
