'Come on Kally feel the music. Feel it.' Mr. Pentico says.
'BECAUSE I CAN'T SEE IT. RIGHT?! I CAN'T SEE THE MUSIC. I HAVE TO FEEL IT!' I yell at him grabbing my cane and walking out of the lesson room. I pick the ground for the door than walk out feeling the cool spring air. I tuck my piano book in my bag and start poking my way back to my moms car which was always the first one in the parking lot.
'How did it go, Kally?' my mom asks.
'AGH! I hate that man, he doesn't understand that I am blind!' I say putting my cane next to me.
'I'm sure he does he is trying as hard as he can, Kally.' My mom says soothingly.
'I know. that was mean, I shouldn't have said that.' I say feeling the window, feeling the cool air push against it. Since I am blind my other senses are stronger. I can hear and feel things very well.
'Can you run in and get me some can tomato soup?' my mom asks me. I like it how most people still act like I am a 16 year old girl that can still do things even though I am blind.
'Yea, sure mom.' I say grabbing my cane and stepping out of the car. I poke my way into the store. I could sense someone behind the first cash register.
'Um, can you help me find the can food isle?' I asked the person behind the cash register.
'Yea, sure.' says a boy. He seems my age. I felt his swift air come around the cash register. I grabbed his arm that felt firm. he stopped.
'Sorry, I'm blind and I need to know where you going.' I say. I wasn't so shy any more about me being blind. I felt his forearm flex and I knew that flex meant he was smiling. I may be 16 but I am actually in college. I study all the time that I am not playing the piano. I have studied everything about the human body so I know if someone is flexing a specific muscle that they are doing something.
'That's okay. And nothing to be sorry about, that's the way you are.' He said. He walked with me.
'What's your name.' I asked.
'Leon.' he reply's. 'What's your name?' it wasn't as if he was trying to make little conversation. It was like he was really curious.
'Kally' I smile at him cause I felt his gaze on me. He stopped.
'Here we are. Need help picking out a can?' he asked. normally that would annoy me but, right now it didn't.
'Nope.' I smile. I went up and lightly touched a couple cans till I found a loose paper fitting one with many little dents. 'does this say Hentz?' I asked him.
'Ah, yea. how did you do that?' he asked.
'Years of practice.' I say.
'Alright, well, are you good?' he asked.
'Yup. but I am going to look around a bit more.' I said.
'Okay.' he said and I heard his footsteps fade off. he seemed nice. I wonder if he was cute. What is cute? These things didn't bother me because I didn't really know what things looked like in the first place. I took out my cane and started picking around. I went down a couple isles till I felt my stick come out from under me. I fell onto the floor hearing laughter. Two female and one male.
'Hey, watch where your going.' said one of the girls.
'Oh, she can't, remember? Blind people can't see.' said the other female in a baby voice. They all laughed and I felt someone kick me, feeling then step over me than another one. Than the last one hurt the most, right in the rib. So there I lay, on the ground cringing. I need to find my stick. I stomped my foot on the ground, trying to figure if it was close or not by the vibrations. I couldn't find it. Soon I heard footsteps.
'Kally. Are you okay?' asked a boy. it was Leon.
'Yea, just my rib.' I say cringing again in pain. since my senses were very strong I could feel the pain even worse than a normal person could.
'Okay, just a second.' he said. I felt him roll me over on my back lifting my shoulders so I was sitting up. I heard clinking of my cane being picked up. Leon put it in my hands wrapping my fingers around it and holding them tightly there.
'I'm feeling better, can you help me up?' I ask him.
'Yea, of course.' he says. I felt very strong arms surround me and pull me up. I got my wallet out of my bag that was around my shoulder.
'Can you ring me up?' I ask him.
'Um, I will when you tell me what just happened to get you on the ground.' he said. I sigh popping my hip leaning against my cane.
'Just stupid teenage kids, jumping a handy-capped person.' I say shrugging.
'Do you really think of yourself like that?' he asked shifting his weight, I could feel it.
'That's what everyone else thinks.' I say.
'Than you're not the girl I thought you were.' he says.
'Why do I care what you think.' I say.
'That's who I thought you were.' he said. 'very rare to find a girl that doesn't care of what people think of her.'
'Well, I was just clarifying what people think. I never said I cared what they thought but yes. Yes your right, very rare to find a girl that doesn't care what other people think.' I say.
'Which is why I wanted to ask you out tonight.' he said. I laughed.
'Rare to find a girl who doesn't care what people think. But even more rare to find a girl who likes to be independent.' I say.
'Have you ever tried not to be independent?' he asks.
'No.' I say keeping my head up high. I was a very independent person and I liked being independent. I didn't need a boy to bring me down.
'I'm not making promises. just have one night. Just friends.' he says.
'Friends, eh?' I ask. 'I met you ten minutes ago and you claim us as friends?'
'It doesn't matter how long you know them.'
'Fine. Pick me up. The apartment above the piano shop.' I say.
'See you at 7.' he says.
"I won't see you.' I say back. I start picking around to find my way to a cash register to check out and go back to the car.
'What took you so long?' my mom asked as soon I stepped in the car.
'I have a date tonight.' I say slowly and kind of confused. How could I give in so quickly. My mom shifted over giving me a hug.
'OH HONEY THAT'S GREAT!' my mom squeals. 'Who with?!' she asks quickly.
'A guy named Leon.' I say.
'OH! Leon Baker. His father is a doctor. Great boy. great boy.' my mom said. I could tell in her voice that she was smiling... so was i.
'YOU GOING ON A DATE WITH LEON BAKER?!' yelled my friend Nicole, threw the phone.
'Yea. you know him?' I ask.
'Talk about hottie!' she says. I laugh.
'I take that as a yes and a good thing.' I say into my phone.
'Okay I am coming over to help you get ready for the date.' she says.
'It doesn't matter. it's not like I can see how pretty I will look.' I mutter. 'I'm sorry, Nicole, I shouldn't have said that. I'm just nervous.' I say. I normally am really positive about being blind but I was just nervous. My very first date. Nicole came over. Nicole had smooth skin and short curly hair but I heard from every one of her boyfriends that she was beautiful and that she had green eyes and red hair.
'Nicole. What do I look like.' I say feeling the smooth fabric of the dress I was wearing. It was strapless and came to my knees. But I felt a t-shirt under the dress.
'Well,' she said. she was used to this. I asked her what things looked like all the time. She never got annoyed. 'Your long dark brown hair is how it normally is. Down and wavy. Your pale blue eyes have blue make up on it and black mascara. You have lip gloss on and a green sundress on with a t-shirt under it. Your wearing white wedges shoes that complement your dress. Beautiful.' she says. I had a hand on her arm just to feel her smile. It made me smile too. It's not like I knew what the colors she mention looked like. But I liked how she told me everything. I only knew what one color looked like. Black. It was my favorite color. cause it is all I see.
"Thanks, Nicole. Thanks for everything.' I say.
Ding Dong.
