Hair Care Tips for Black Hair
Black hair needs to be treated in a more intensive way because it is prone to easier damage. Here are some effective tips that you should follow.
Nourishment
There are several easy ways by which you can make sure that there is hair nourishment provided for. The most important of these is to use specialized hair oils. Using oil in your hair and massaging your scalp with it leads to improving blood circulation to the scalp (thereby leading to hair growth), taking away the stress and providing moisture to the dry hair roots. Plus it acts as a lubricant and prevents the loss of natural oil during a head wash. Choose either herbal oils or specialized oils for yourself. Here's how you go about it:
- Try and oil your hair at least once a week after it has been warmed sufficiently.
- Use your fingertips and gently massage onto the roots.
- Spread the oil all over very carefully and then proceed to gently massage the scalp for 5 minutes or more.
- After this, wrap the head with a towel that has been dipped in hot water and steam for 5-8 minutes (or till the water loses its heat). This will open the pores and let the oil seep in.
- Let the oil stay for about an hour before washing it off.
Washing needs to be done in a way such that it does not damage the hair further. Here are some tips on how to go about washing hair effectively well.
- De-tangle your hair with a wide toothed comb so that it does not lead to knots while washing.
- Use lukewarm water for washing the hair or else the hair texture will get damaged as well as turning hair into a brittle mess.
- Buy a shampoo that has a low pH level especially if you wash your hair often because harsh chemicals will strip away the natural oils and cause the hair to become more dry.
- Massage the scalp with only your fingertips and not the palm. The friction will cause the roots to become brittle.
- Shampoo in one direction so that there are no knots formed.
- Make sure that you have a separate conditioner. This is a very important step and will go on to provide the required moisture to the hair strands.
- The conditioner should be mainly applied at the hair tips and the length of the hair, but never at the roots.
- Keep the conditioner in for the required time before washing it off.
- If your hair is especially dry, you can use a small amount of hair oil and massage it into your scalp post bath.
Here are some other tips that will help in maintaining thick, lustrous and healthy hair.
- Be very careful with the hair care products that you use. There are specially formulated products that ensure deep conditioning and cleansing, which is essential for black hair.
- As far as possible, avoid treating your hair with perming, straightening and coloring. These damage the very structure of the hair and lead to dullness, breakage and hair loss.
- Concentrate on the diet that you take and make sure that it is well-balanced. Diet plays a very important role in maintaining the health of the hair.
- Take vitamin E supplements to promote effective hair growth and health.
- Do not tie your hair very tightly cause this not only stretches the strands but leads to split ends as well.
- Make sure that you trim your hair every 3 months. This takes care of the split ends (if any) and promotes hair growth.
