Bitten Wings Part 12

Yes, his name's Marcus... all the other names were really cool and stuff, but they didn't really fit him..
I sat in a tree, resting against a branch, watching everyone set up camp. A fire had started, Marcus running into the darkness to gather wood. I stayed close to the light. Jean was trying to find a place to sleep, Drake shouting at me to help.
"Go gather some wood with Marcus," he shouted as Marcus set down his pile. Marcus looked at Drake, shaking his head. I laughed, "Yeah, right. Great idea. Have the only thing that can help your world go with the thing that's killing your world. Super idea."
Marcus rolled his eyes, opening his mouth to tell me that he's getting cured. I cut him off with a wave of my hand, "Yeah, yeah. That sad, pathetic story of how you aren't really here to suck out my blood. I think we could all recite that by now." He frowned at me, then walked off into the darkness. I jumped down from my tree to get close to the heat of the fire.
"I don't know why you insist on bugging him about what he is. It isn't his fault."
I stared at Jean like she was crazy, "Oh, yes, of course. I believe I've lost my manners." I said sarcastically, "And now to apologize I'll just let him drink-"
Marcus released his wood, sending a loud noise through the forest. I turned to look at him and he looked as if he was seeing right through me. I looked around to find what he was looking at, but nothing was around. Jean picked herself up and shook him.
Nothing.
Completely unpredictable, I thought. He blinked after a few minutes, and looked at me. He staggered back as he looked into my eyes. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms, "What now?"
"I-I'm sorry," he shook his head then smiled at me, his white teeth shining in the light. "I don't know what came over me." he smiled again and poked at the fire with a stick. I sighed, and glanced a Drake who shrugged. I sat by the fire across from Marcus who couldn't keep his eyes away. He asked me to sit by him. I politely refused, and when I say politely, I actually mean it. For some reason I didn't think it was good to taunt right now. He glared at me, then smiled, again.
"What's so funny?" I asked, wondering why he was smiling so much.
He laughed, "Nothing. Everything's how it should be."
My hair stood on end, a shiver running up and down my spine. I swallowed hard and looked away, his icy eyes seeming to pierce me.
"So," Jean broke the silence, "what shall we have for dinner."
"How 'bout Angel?" Drake poked sarcastically. I stared at him so harshly that he looked down, his smile wiped clean. Even though I couldn't see him, I could feel Marcus smiling at me. He was dying to say something. I turned to look at him and I barely made out a chuckle.
"Marcus?"
He looked up at me, his eyes cold, "What?"
"How long exactly does that cure of your's work until the next treatment?"
His grin grew larger, "A little less then a month."
"How long has it been since your last treatment?"
"A month and two weeks."
"I see." I glanced at Jean and Drake who seemed to be catching on. He glanced darkly at Jean and Drake. Then turned back to me.
"The King wishes to see you tomorrow night."
I laughed, "And you think I'll see him?!"
He stood up, staring down at me, "Actually, I know you will."
A hand hit me across the face and I immediately jumped into the sky. Suddenly he was on me, grabbing my legs and pulling me down. I hit my back on the ground hard, knocking the wind out of me. As I lay gasping for air he walked over to me, his icy eyes piercing into my soul. I rolled onto my side and pushed my self up when a foot pressed me back down.
"You don't know when to stay down, do you?" came the newly icy voice of Marcus.
I flipped around, gripped his leg, and threw him into a nearby tree. He blinked as if surprised to be caught off guard.
"How did you do that?"
I was on my feet, fists clenched, teeth barred, and didn't respond. He looked me up and down as I shifted my wings black, "It won't happen again," he said. He leapt at me, and I side stepped him then kicked him on the side. He hit a rock, shattering it on impact and before I had time to think leapt at me again. He caught me on the shoulders, and pushed me into a tree. I gasped for breath and crumpled to my knees.
"I knew I couldn't trust you," I hissed. He laughed and knelt down, "And I knew the only way I could be 'cured' was to turn you in."
I looked at him, "What?"
"The King has the only cure, if I turn you in, he'll give it to me."
"But then the whole world will be thrust-"
"Into darkness, I know, but he's promised me safety and allowed me to live during that time."
"But your family, friends.."
He laughed, "I don't have any. Probably won't since I'm sending the world into darkness."
Then I was out cold as something hit me on the side of the head.
