How to Make a Bird House?
Before actually heading to the instructions on how to make bird houses, it is important to consider a few factors. The first factor to be considered is the kind of birds you are interested in attracting. Depending on this factor, we can decide the shape and size of the bird house. The type of bird nesting houses, the bird house plan, etc. are all directly related to the different types of birds in consideration.
For example, robins and phoebes will prefer sheltered platforms and will not reside in enclosed bird nesting houses. On the other hand, tree swallows, wrens, bluebirds, etc. are attracted to enclosed bird houses. Moreover, depending on the weather, you need to drill holes in the bird house for ventilation. In hot weather, more holes are required to cool the interiors of the bird house. Another point to be taken into consideration is the location of the bird house. The location should be such that the birds are not threatened by their natural predators.
How to Make Bird Houses with Gourd?
Materials Required
- One dried gourd
- Power drill
- 3/8 inch drill
- Sharp knife
- Eye screw
- Polyurethane
- Water based exterior enamel
- Acrylic paints
The shape and size of the dried gourd should be in accordance with the type of bird you are expecting to attract. Depending on the size of the bird, drill a hole in the dried gourd using a power drill. After drilling the gourd, clean out the contents (large seeds, fibers and dust) with a knife. Using a 3/8 inch drill, have three holes made at the bottom of the bird nesting house. These three holes will act as drainage holes and will prevent water accumulation in the bird house. Using the eye screw, fix it to the top of the bird house, thereby enabling you to have something to hang the bird house with. Next, paint a coat of water based exterior enamel onto the bird house. After it dries paint the gourd bird house with acrylic paints in the colors you desire. Finish by applying a coat of polyurethane. These coatings are not meant for the interiors of the bird house, because of their deleterious nature.
