Pine Cone Bird Feeder: For making a pine cone feeder, you would require a pine cone, light weight wire, peanut butter and bird seeds. Wrap the wire around the top of the pine cone in such a manner that it creates a hanger. Spread the peanut butter all over the pine cone, and insert bird seeds into it. Hang this feeder up and make it available to the little guests.
Cereal Bird Feeder: Take any round cereal with a hole such as cheerios, spread peanut butter and hang it. Birds need fat, carbohydrates and proteins. You can make very good bird feeders if you also include wholesome items like sunflower seeds, suet, cracked corn and fruits and also mixed seeds.
Old Christmas Tree Bird Feeder: You can make use of an old Christmas tree as a bird feeder. Place it in one corner of your garden or in the backyard. Coat the branches with peanut butter and hang food items such as suet. Since, in winters birds need more fat, suet would be perfect. You can also hang bird feeders like the above mentioned pine cone or the cereal bird feeder types with the Christmas tree. This is an amazing idea to make homemade bird feeders.
Homemade Bird Feeders Disadvantages: There is a risk in feeding wild birds. Birds collecting at the homemade bird feeder in your garden might spread or contract various types of diseases. Poorly maintained bird feeders allow pathogenic microbial growth and thus, can cause illness to the visiting birds. The birds coming to the bird feeders are always at a risk of predation by cats and dogs. If you wish to have a bird feeder in your backyard, you must first ensure the safety of your feathered guests. This can be done by taking care of the below-mentioned points.
- Regular disinfection of bird feeders.
- Avoiding rancid or moldy feed.
- Proper positioning of the bird feeders so as to avoid crowding.
