Before designing bird houses, you should consider few factors. You must know which species you want to harbor. A bird's instinct and behavior is must dependent upon the shelter they get. The nest pattern and habitat vary according to the species. They have specific requirements for mating season. If they do not perceive the conditions favorable, they will never visit the nest for the second time. Bird boxes can be enclosed or open. Few species love privacy while others love openness. Wrens prefer enclosed nest while robins love to dwell in open boxes.
The location plays a vital role for their attraction. Make sure you place the bird box away from the vicinity of predators. It should be placed at a certain height where pets cannot reach. You must build the box in such a way to allow easy cleaning inside and outside, both. The nest must be spacious and should be well ventilated. The comfort zone of the bird should be kept in mind before you construct a bird house.
How to Build Bird Boxes
Building bird boxes needs a lot of patience. Survival of the dweller will completely depend upon your architectural expertise. Accurate measurement and design is required to build a perfect bird box. You must try the simple designs first. Once you have derived a fair concept, try improvising the designs. Wooden boxes are more robust than cardboard boxes, although the process is overall same. The steps to build a simple bird box are elaborated below.
Materials
- Cardboard/wood
- Ruler
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper
- Ruler
- Hammer
- Nails
- Scissor
- Draw the outline of the bird box in a rough paper. Sketch the sides, front, back and the bottom. Then draw the roof and door.
- Take equal measurements for the roof and the walls. Keep it simple and do not opt for complicated designs.
- Now implement the same design on the wood or on the cardboard. Keep it a little spacious.
- Cut the cardboard of equal length to build the side walls.
- Now construct the front walls and cut a door for the bird to go in and out. The back of the wall needs to be enclosed with a cardboard of same size.
- The roof can be made slanted or flat. For slopping roofs you have to cut two pieces again, of equal size.
- Flat roof are easy to build. You need to attach an extra flat board on the top of the walls.
- On the roof pierce holes for ventilation.
- The cardboard size should be a little longer to make the floor of the box.
- Glue it to the walls of the box. This step completes your cardboard bird box.
- To build wooden boxes, you need to cut the pieces with a saw according to the measurements.
- Smooth the surface and the edges with a sandpaper.
- Now attach the walls to the floor with the help of wood glue.
- For extra strength, nail pins at the joints with the help of a hammer.
- You can attach a piece of wood on the front and the back, either like door (with a hinge) or crop a opening to allow the bird get in and out.
- Similarly, attach the roof on the top of the walls with the help of wood glue and then nail it to make it strong.
- Leave overnight for the glue to dry.
