Selena Gomez was born on July 22, 1992, in Grand Prairie, Texas. She is the only child of Ricardo Gomez and Mandy Cornett. Mandy Cornett was a versatile stage actress herself. She gave birth to Selena when she was just 16. By the time Selena was five, Ricardo and Mandy parted ways. Selena was named after the Tejano music singer by the same name. Her father's Quintanilla Mexican lineage and mother's Italian lineage gives Selena Gomez her much hyped-about charisma. Gomez is a 2004 Disney discovery.

Selena Gomez made her first stage appearance at the age of seven. She spent her seventh birthday at the casting call for Barney & Friends. Competing with thousands didn't deter young Selena at all. Her confidence and attitude won her the role of Gianna, a recurring character in the hit children's television series. She became an integral part of the cast in seasons seven and eight. Gomez has made a mark as a model too. She is the face of national commercials designed for Wal-Mart, T.G.I. Friday's and Hasbro. She has appeared in films like Spy Kids 3D, Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial By Fire, and Brain Zapped.
