Nicole Camille Escovedo was born on September 21, 1981 in Berkeley, California. She is the biological daughter of Latin musician, Peter Michael Escovedo III, but was adopted by Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey-Richie, in 1990. Soon after the adoption, the couple divorced and Lionel remarried, giving Nicole two younger siblings, Myles and Sofia through his second marriage. Nicole's godparents are Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, and oil heiress, Nancy Davis. At the age of 5, she began kindergarten at The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California. Along with figure skating, she also learned the guitar, violin, piano and cello. She graduated in 1999 from Montclair College Preparatory School and learned Arts and Media at the University of Arizona.

Career
In 2003, Nicole started her career by starring in the reality series The Simple Life along with her childhood best friend Paris Hilton. She made guest appearances in many television shows like Eve, Rock Me Baby, American Dreams, 8 Simple Rules and Chuck. Nicole made her acting debut in a comic drama movie Kids in America in 2005. She wrote a semi-autobiographical fictional novel The Truth About Diamonds, which was published by Bharell Jackson Publishing. The novel ranked at number #32 in Hardcover Fiction on The New York Times Bestseller List. In 2007, Nicole declared plans to start a jewelry, accessories and sunglasses line along with a perfume and style book. Later in 2008, she announced plans to launch 'House of Harlow', a jewelry line which would eventually extend into children's wear and accessories. Nicole was a part of the rock band Darling along with model Josie Maran, and Soleil and Sofia Alberti. In 2005, she made her musical debut by playing the piano on an American talk show The View.

Personal Life
In April 2005, it was reported that Nicole and childhood friend Paris Hilton were no longer friends. The cause of the split, however, was not disclosed by either of them. Eventually in October 2006, they reconciled. In early 2006, Nicole made headlines with an extremely thinner appearance, and though she claimed it was not an eating disorder, she sought help from a psychiatrist and physical trainer. Nicole was even hospitalized for dehydration and later was diagnosed with hypoglycemia.

Nicole is well-known for her long string of high profile relationships. Initially, she dated DJ Adam Goldstein, but broke-up after a nine-month engagement. She was also linked with her childhood boyfriend Brody Jenner. Nicole's most talked about relationship was with Joel Madden, the lead singer of Good Charlotte (an American band). The couple have a daughter Harlow Winter Kate Richie Madden, born on January 11, 2008. In February 2009, Joel announced that they were expecting their second child.

In February 2003, under the charge of driving with a suspended driver's license and in the possession of heroin, Nicole was arrested in Malibu, California. She was arrested again on December 11, 2006 by the California Highway Patrol after failing a field sobriety test. As per papers filed with the Superior Court of California, she signed an 18-month SB 38 anti-drinking driver education program.
