Kate Winslet is an Academy Award winner English actress, best known for her portrayal of characters like Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic, and Hanna Schmitz in The Reader. She has won all the major awards in film industry, including the Academy Awards, the BAFTA and the Screen Actors Guild Award. She became the youngest actress to receive two Oscar nominations at the age of 22, in 1997.

Kate was born on 5th October, 1975, in Berkshire, England. Her father, Roger John Winslet was a swimming pool contractor, while her mother, Sally Anne, was a barmaid. Kate joined Redroofs Theater School, in Maidenhead, Berkshire, at an early age of 11 years. She faced the camera for the first time while shooting for Sugar Puffs cereals commercial, directed by Tim Pope. Kate Winslet's acting career began with Dark Season, a science fiction serial on the BBC.

In 1994, Kate made her silver screen debut in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures. She won an Empire Award and London Critics' Circle Film Award for her portrayal of Juliet Hulme in this movie. In 1995, she featured in Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee. The film was a huge box office success, raking in a total of $135 million worldwide. Winslet won BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award for this film. Both her movies in the following year, Jude and Hamlet, were well appreciated by the critics. On 22nd November, 1998, Kate married director Jim Threapleton. Kate gave birth to a daughter, Mia Honeyborn, on 12th October, 2000. Soon after the couple got divorced in 2001.

In 2000, she appeared in Quills directed by Philip Kaufman. Her performance in this film received critical acclaim from all around. In the same year, her album Listen To the Story Teller won her the Grammy Award for Best Spoken World Album for Children. In 2001, she won the British Independent Film Award for splendid performance in director Michael Apted's Enigma. The same year, she worked with Richard Eyre for his critically acclaimed film Iris. Kate was also nominated for the Academy Award for her portrayal of young Iris in this flick. Next, after a break of about a year, she was seen in director Alan Parker's drama film The Life of David Gale.

She married renowned director Sam Mendes, on 24th May, 2003. They have a son named, Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes, who was born on 22nd December, 2003. In 2004, she featured in French director Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Marc Forster's Finding Neverland. Both the movies earned her nominations for various prestigious awards. In 2005, she was nominated for the Emmy Award for her appearance in an episode of the British situation comedy, Extras. In 2006, Kate appeared in Todd Field's Little Children, for which she won the BAFTA - The Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.

The year 2008 brought in tremendous success for this talented actress. After being nominated on five occasions, she finally won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Hanna Schmitz, a former Nazi concentration camp guard, in director Stephen Daldry's The Reader. She was also awarded the BAFTA and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for the same film. The same year, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of April Wheeler in the movie Revolutionary Road directed by Sam Mendes.
