Bill Clinton Praises Obama as His Cabinet Rounds into Shape

Obama picks national security team and fills other posts, with the media continually questioning his selection of former rival Hillary Clinton for secretary of state.
President-elect Barack Obama presented his hand-picked team of national security advisors yesterday, officially nominating former presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton to the top diplomatic post of secretary of state and indicating that he wants Robert Gates to remain defense secretary. Additionally, Obama named Eric Holder attorney general and the governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano, as the secretary of homeland security. Finally, Obama named foreign policy advisor Susan Rice to the post of U.N. ambassador and retired Marine General James L. Jones to the post of national security advisor.

Speaking of the difficult times ahead and of his choices, Obama noted "the time has come for a new beginning, a new dawn of American leadership to overcome the challenges of the 21st century. We will strengthen our capacity to defeat our enemies and support our friends. We will renew old alliances and forge new and enduring partnerships."

Responding to repeated questions about the feasibility of working closely together with his former rival in Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama declared, "I am a strong believer in strong personalities and strong opinions. I think that’s how the best decisions are made." Questions came even after he brushed off those concerns, however, leading him to direct his comments directly at the media. "This is fun for the press to try to stir up whatever quotes were generated during the campaign. I understand, and you’re having fun. There’s nothing wrong with that." Obama was steadfast in his support for his other nominations as well, noting that his choice for attorney general, Eric Holder, was a tough and independent justice. Obama gave his support for Holder by saying, "Let me be clear: the attorney general serves the American people. And I have every expectation that Eric will protect our people, uphold the public trust, and adhere to our Constitution."
