Beyond the Woods - Chapter Ten

Millions of things were running through my mind right now but all I asked was, "What are you?" Mr. Calivastro simply answered, "Vampires."
When I woke up from my nap I found Darren watching me from across the room, sitting in my resting chair. "Nice nap?" He asked. I sat up in my bed, feeling awkward having him in my room. "Yes I feel a lot better thanks." "No problem," Darren answered. "No offense or anything but what are you doing in my room watching me?" He didn't look surprised by my demanding question but answered, "Well I volunteered to make sure you didn't run off again to any more parties. But don't freak out or anything I've only been up here for several minutes." "Um okay," I said. "And your parents sent me up here to escort you downstairs; apparently we are all having a gathering." "Oh joy, okay thanks for telling me I will be down in a minute." "Sorry but I was told to escort you down myself." He said.

Alright now this was getting sort of even more awkward. Was he trying to tell me what to do? I sure do hope not, for this guy's sake. But I knew his personality already and it was important for him to follow rules and listen to his parents. So I agreed to let him escort me down. If that's what floats his boat sure I'll go along with it. We arrived downstairs and went to the study, where my father worked. It was probably the biggest study room known to man. As we walked in everyone else had already taken a seat at the big work table. Christian's face frowned when he saw Darren and me walking in arm in arm. As we sat down the mood seemed to change.

"Ava darling, we are all so glad to hear your better after that unfortunate event," Mrs. Calivastro spoke. Although I was still a hot mess from last night I was in a much better state. "Thank you," I shortly replied. "Dear, there is something that your father and I should have told you a long time ago," my mother said. "Okay well tell me now then." "It's not so simple and easy to just blurt out," Sean said. "Understand that this might not make since at first and after we tell you this everything will change." My father said. I wasn't sure what to make out of this so I just nodded my head ready to hear whatever it is that they're about to tell me.

Mr. Calivastro began speaking, "Centuries ago, before human evolution, our kind existed. No one truly knows how our species started but there are always conspiracies. Within our species new generations are born, and every one hundred years a new royal king is sworn in, taking over the thrown unless the people of our kind desire this particular king's ruling and beg for him to continue his rein in power. Throughout this, what the humans call, United Nation two of the most powerful kingdoms exist. For many years our kind has revolved around these kingdoms rules and power. Of course we always have threats trying to take over our beloved kingdom, but never have they succeeded." Alright this man needs to be put in the Looney bin, I thought. What was he rambling on about? Can he really be serious?

"Your family and mine call each other old friends because literally we are. Your father and I have known each other since our birth, but coming from different kingdoms the distance put a strain on our friendship. After one hundred years we both finally became kings, him of the Northern hemisphere and I of the Southern. Our strength in power grew as well as our friendship. After marrying and having children things have changed and soon it will be the destiny for my eldest son and your brother to rule our kingdoms." Dead silence. I guess it was my cue to say something but what could I possibly say?

I still wasn't even sure if I believed this insane story or not. So Mr. Calivastro continued, "While choosing our wives, we have to find high class human or non-human women. In our case, both our soulmates were human. Thankfully these two lovely ladies sitting at this table were kind enough in honoring your father and I with partnership. After marriage of course we had our children you and your brother were hybrids and mine were all vampires since I changed my wife after our wedding. Ordinarily when the parents think it is best to change them, they do unless you find a soulmate and plans are different."

"Now the time has come for my son, Christian, and your brother Sean to be fitted with a wife since their titles will soon change. Eventually when your parents think it's best, or when you are ready, you will be transformed as well." I had so many different thoughts and questions. Millions of things were running through my mind right now but the question I needed to get out of the way came first, "What are you?" Mr. Calivastro simply answered, "Vampires."
