Chapter Eleven
This was too much. I stood up, pushing my chair back, and walked out of the room gaining speed the further I went. There was only one place that could help save my sanity, my woods. I bolted out of the front door not caring to look to see if anyone followed me. I sprinted across the meadow and came upon my woods. I did not hesitate on entering; whatever was out there would have to be dealt with later. I just needed to run and be free.
I ran for miles which felt like only minutes. I let my hair down and fly loose through the wind. So far so good, I already felt ten times better and I haven't come across the shadow man yet. After reaching the rapids I heard voices shouting my name. Damn it, I thought. They must be looking for me. Eventually I would turn back and go home but I needed time. I found a big rock near the river strong enough to hold my weight and sprawled my body across it. My eyes wandered across the forest and began admiring everything within it. The sun was going down and I found myself watching the sunset which reminded me of my father and myself when I was little. He used to take me out into the forest and find the perfect spot to watch the sun go down. We never had time to do anything anymore, I guess now I know the real reason why.
I was recalling some of my old memories when I heard heavy breathing behind me. I looked back and saw Darren standing there looking at me. "Hey," he said before coming over to join me on my rock. "Do you mind if I sit," he asked. "Go ahead," I replied. "I know it is a lot to take in right now but things will ease up, you'll see." "Yeah it probably will," I muttered. We laid there on the rock for a while admiring the stars when Darren sat up. "Me saying this will most likely make you even more stressed out and confused but I want to set it out in the open." "Alright then go for it," I said. "I know we haven't known each other for a decent amount of time yet, but I would like you to know that I have feelings for you." I sort of knew this was coming but I still felt taken back. "Darren I-," I had no idea what to say. "It's fine, I don't expect an answer from you yet, I just wanted to let you know before Christian showed his affections for you". But evidently it appears that he is already trying to woo you and I don't blame him.
"You are something special that is for sure." I stared at him with my eyes wide and mouth open, I could picture myself looking like a complete idiot. "I better get you back before they send out the army to look for you," Darren said. "An army?" I asked. "Yes, the best suited combat vampires in our nation." He used the word I was trying to avoid, vampires. "So it really is true then, you are all vampires?" I asked. "Yes and soon you will be too." Before we had a chance to continue our conversation I heard more footsteps in the distance. Moments later Christian arrived on scene and found us still laying on the rock. I quickly got up not wanting him to think anything was happening between Darren and I, but there was, for Darren at least. Yes, he was an amazing man but he was not for me. Deep within my heart I knew that after meeting Christian he was the only man I could ever have feelings for.
All three of us walked back home and the whole time my mystery stalker never made an appearance. After walking me back into the house Darren guided me back to the study, where everyone was already waiting. I quietly sat down. Mrs. Calivastro was the first one to speak up, "How are you feeling my dear?" She asked. "Confused, mystified, worried, stressed, tired and I think that pretty much covers it," I answered. "That is perfectly understandable, I think you need some girl time to talk and smooth things over." Said Camilla. This woman was so kind and compassionate. She could tell I needed answers to all of my questions. "If you men will excuse us, we are going to be headed up to my chambers," My mother, the queen said. All of them just nodded while Camilla, my mother, and I walked towards her bedroom.
I sat down on my mom's vanity chair and stared at myself in the mirror. It has been a while since I actually looked and studied my reflection. Everything seemed different from last time. My face was older and my golden hair longer. My eyes showed a hidden story behind them that was about to be opened and foretold. Mrs. Camilla came from behind me and started to brush my hair. My mother used to do this to me when I was little and I felt so special from the attention. "I always wanted a daughter, but was blessed with three wonderful sons instead," she said. "So you must have questions?" she asked. "What do you drink?" I asked. "Blood," she replied. "But our bodies can digest human food as well." "So you were once human?" "Yes, but I had to be changed in order to have my children." "Why?" I asked. "While being human, carrying a vampire child is possible, but the outcome of the mother never ends well, unless she is changed while carrying a child." I turned to look up towards my mom as she spoke.
"Having your brother was a miracle. He came soon after the wedding and I was changed minutes before I gave birth. I gave birth to a beautiful hybrid baby boy. It was unbelievable but not as unbelievable when I found out I was pregnant with you. Everyone was worried about my health and yours since the situation with my last child was so different. But for some unexplainable reason you were born 100% human. It was a mystery and complete shock and still is today." "Who has already been turned?" I curiously asked. "In our family and in the Calivastro's everyone but you." My mother answered.
"Does it hurt?" "Yes very much but not as much for hybrids." She answered. "So if I ever were to be changed it will hurt me even more since I am a full human?" I questioned. "Sadly, yes my dear. I am afraid so." I frowned. I wasn't even sure yet if I even wanted to become a vampire and already I feared the thought of going through the gruesome painful change. "How does one become a vampire?" I asked. "By being bitten by one, but it is a law that one can only be turned by their soulmate or true love or a family member when they are ready to commit." Camilla answered. "So vampire females are capable of having children?" I asked. "Yes, everything works the same as it would for a human." I just nodded, acting sort of embarrassed. "But there is no need to worry about that now."
"There will be plenty of time after you're married." "Married?" I questioned confused. "This is the hard part dear", My mother explained. "It is only proper that you, being a royal, marry into another royal family and it is a custom for marriage at a young age. And being that we are so close to the Calivastros it is a fair statement to say that you shall marry one of them." "What if I choose not to?" I asked. "I am sorry Ava, but you have no choice." "This is ridiculous. How can you just spring this all on me and then expect me to just sit here and go along without my consent?" I sneered. "I don't expect you to understand now but some day you will. Now go rest up, tomorrow we are throwing a royal celebration in order of your coming out." My mom said. "A party? Are you crazy? How can you even think about having a party when all of this is going on?" I yelled. I stormed out of her room and ran to mine, which was quite a ways away.
Everything I have been told all of these years has been a lie. We really weren't poor, we were the complete opposite. I was not just an ordinary girl, I was a princess. But why would they hide this from me? There's only one reason, to protect me. But what are they desperately trying to protect me from? Sometimes I think being overprotected has the opposite effects of what it is supposed to.
