Anyone who heard Beyonce’s version of the National Anthem on Monday can appreciate that she is a tremendously talented singer - and she gave a moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. But it’s unclear whether the track that was heard on Monday was Beyonce singing the Anthem live - or whether it was a pre-recorded version that she chose to use instead. Comments from a spokesperson for the Marine Corps Band indicated that Beyonce went with a pre-recorded version of the song at the last minute.
Obviously, it really doesn’t matter if she was lip-synching the song, but people really seem to get worked up about this sort of thing. The reality is that artists like Beyonce sometimes feel like the conditions aren’t optimal for them to give a truly "live" performance. And whose place is it to really question that? After all, if it is Beyonce’s voice and she’s there "performing", what difference does it make?
Artists often choose to go with pre-recorded tracks because they simply sound better than they could possibly sound performing live. Fans and media should appreciate that as opposed to bashing it. Beyonce was performing at a historically significant event that was much bigger than any concert performance - and she wanted to make sure that she sounded as good as possible. If she actually used a pre-recorded track, then she made the right call. If that was really her voice singing the Anthem live, well then that’s one of the best live performances of the song ever heard. Either way, it was great. That should be enough.
