Between Heaven and Hell - Prologue and Chapter 1

When you're half-demon and half-angel... well, you gotta admit, the world isn't going to let you by with NO problems! I hope you like my new story idea! From the author of Tearstreak Dawn!!
Prologue

You know what's funny? How life was much simpler when you had no idea what was bad and what was good. How it didn't matter who your parents were as long as they loved you. How, at the end of the day, there was always someone to protect you from all the bad monsters under your bed. But you know what's hilarious? When you're facing death trial trying to save your parents, and everyone wants to murder you because of your parents. Thank you mom and dad, yeah, I love you too. I'm laughing my lungs out as we speak.

Bet you're thinking wow, this chick's crazy; better get away while I can. I'm not crazy; yeah I'm unique (in a lot more ways than you'd think) but, come on! I'm not mentally retarded or anything! I guess I might want to start at the beginning, instead of the middle of the story. Well, it all started with my parents and a dough nut shop...

Chapter One

*Demon Realm*

"Blade, I am trusting you to find this man and kill him, without mercy. Try not to make it too messy. Maybe stab him in an alley or something, but don't get us in trouble with the Council again." Blade nodded. He shifted into his human form, thinking it'd be simpler if humans didn't scream when they saw him.

Blade pulled out his knife (soul silver, sharp enough to kill you and painful enough to make sure you die writhing, with your soul ripped out) and tested the point. He looked up, through his ever-changing eyes, and said to his master, "Lord, why am I killing this stupid human?"

His master, the Lord of Demons, chuckled and replied, "The 'pure ones' seem to be interested in him. Thought it would be fun to see why. Oh, make sure you question him before killing him. Like I said, I want to know."
Blade nodded and said, "Permission to leave, my Lord?"
"Permission granted."
Blade turned and left the throne room, shrouded in darkness, thinking to himself, I hope, just this once, nothing goes wrong. What a wish.

*High Heavens*

"Ray, you must understand, this human may hold the answer!"
Ray sighed and looked at him with her all-knowing golden eyes, "Sir, this 'human' is nothing but evil. How many people has he killed? How many things has he gambled away? His mother's in bed, nearly dead, and he doesn't even visit!"
"He may have some problems in his life, which is why you need to help him!"
"Sometimes it seems that I never have time to myself before I go back to saving and helping. I have an aged mother who needs me..."
"Ray, just this one more time, then we can work out any other terms."
She finally nodded, "I'm not happy but very well. Just this one more time. Where does he live again?"
"Las Vegas."
She scrunched her nose and said distastefully, "Sin City? Really? I'll reek of sin for weeks!"
"Ray, you already agreed," said the high-ranking officer in a chiding voice.
"I know but, Las Vegas? Why couldn't he live in Los Angeles, New York, the middle of nowhere... anywhere but there?"
"Ray, no more whining. Just go."
She sighed, "Fine. Wish me luck."
He smiled at her, "You don't need luck, Ray. You'll be back home in no time."
She smiled back and walked out of the meeting room and thought to herself, I just hope nothing goes wrong.

*Las Vegas*
*Human Time: 6:48 am.*

Nick Rodriguez was tired to the bone. His life was going down the drain. People wanted to kill him, his mother was going to die soon from cancer, and his father hated him. Where was the pause button in life? Or, maybe, the end button? Just one break from this all could help him. Nick was a very tall man. He had dark hair and brown eyes from his Hispanic father and light skin and a slim figure from his mother. People told him he was a failure to life because he was too scared to make choices, so he let others make choices for him. See where that got him? He sighed and pulled over to Dunkin' Donuts. He got out of his convertible (the same convertible he'd have to sell soon) and went inside.

Blade smirked and thought, this is the human I'm going to kill? Piece of cake.

Ray looked at Nick and thought, Poor thing; he's so lonely... and depressed. Oh well, better get in human form...

Nick ordered some coffee and a glazed doughnut and sat down in a booth. He looked out the window and noticed a very beautiful, slim, blonde lady was walking towards the doughnut shop. He raised his eyebrows then turned as the waitress brought his doughnut and coffee. He took a sip then noticed a very tall man with black hair also coming towards the shop. Wow, seems like everyone wants doughnuts today.

Ray shuddered as the rank smell of Las Vegas filled her nose. She quickly went inside the shop and all the customers turned to stare as the bell chimed, announcing her. She smiled and simply asked for some coffee and sat down at a booth not too far from the human, Nick. She paid for the coffee as the waitress brought it and she sipped. Just as the demon walked into the shop.

Blade sighed and just sat down in a booth and told the waitress black coffee would be nice. He turned to look at the human. Then he noticed the lady angel who was staring at him in open-mouthed surprise. He raised an eyebrow and raised his cup towards her direction, in acknowledgment. She got up and walked towards him and sat down in his booth.

"What are you doing here?"
He took a sip of his coffee, "Walking on rainbows. What does it look like? I'm drinking coffee."
She narrowed her eyes, "What's your intention in being here?"
"Same as you it seems. I have orders to kill the human."
"Uh, not while I'm here. I have orders to help the human."
He smiled and said, "I guess we'll just have to see who gets him first."
"First? I was here first!"
"So? I'm a guy, I don't really care."
"Oh, so being a guy makes a real big difference! Oh, quit! I was here first, he's mine!"
"I don't follow rules, angel."
She let out a low growl, "I'm not your angel."
"Never said you were. Now please go as I wish to drink my coffee alone."
"You- you PIG! No wonder we hate you! You're despicable!"
She got up and left in a huff back to her seat. Blade raised his eyebrows and thought, well, she sure complicates things...
***************
Ray knew that the demon's presence complicated things but she decided to keep her outlook positive. She took a deep breath as she saw Nick go into a shop labeled McDonald's. Strange name. Apparently the place was popular as it was crowded. She decided to check it out but thought he might consider it weird if he sees the same woman again. So, she concentrated and changed her appearance. Her usual golden blonde hair was now a dirty blonde, her golden eyes became a dull blue, and her form became petite instead of slim and tall. Her clothes were a normal blue tank and jean shorts with a colorful necklace.

She looked like some average human girl. She smiled, perfect. Blade knew the angel lady was here as well but he decided he was just going to carry on as usual. He knew his appearance had to be changed or else the human might have a heart attack. He changed his shadow black hair to a warm brown, his ever-changing eyes settled on a green, and kept his lean form. He changed his clothes to a black t-shirt and ripped jeans. He shrugged, normal enough. Now, down to business.
