Betrayal
The two closest people to George have betrayed him and that will cost them their lives.
As he lifted the limp body into the boot of his car he paused and looked at the open eyed face of his friend and business partner of over twenty years. He felt a twinge of remorse; that was until his mind pictured his wife and Dan rolling around in each others arms. "My own damn bed" he cursed and threw the traitor into the cold metal enclosure. "One down, one to go" he sneered at the body "you bastards can spend eternity together in a shallow grave." He ripped a photo from his wallet and looked at his wife "Time to go home and see to you my darling".
He slammed the boot shut and dusted himself off before getting into his Range Rover and driving off down the country road. On the seat beside him were the letters, the letters he found hidden under his wife’s jewelry boxes. He spotted them poking out two days before and nearly fainted as he read them. His wife, Sarah, had always been more interested in his money than in him but still she was his. She may have started of as just a young trophy wife but over the seven years they had been together his love for her had grown. The shock cut through to the bone; the two most important people in his life had betrayed him. They would pay for that betrayal with their lives.
Skidding to a halt on the gravel drive he arrived back at his home. He needed to get her outside somehow, he wanted to blast her with the shotgun but couldn’t risk firing it inside the house, the pellets would go everywhere.
"Sarah darling are you home" he shouted as he stood in his vast hallway. She appeared at the top of the stairs "Hi George what’s up?" For the last time he looked deep into her beautiful green eyes. "Bloody kids have scratched up the whole side of the car when I was in town meeting Dan. Come out the front and have a look."
She looked back sternly "They should string the little bastards up! I’ll just grab a jumper and see you there in a minute." He forced a smile back at her, nodded and went back to the car to wait.
With the shotgun tucked inside his jacket he kept his back turned to the house. He heard the crunching of the loose gravel stones as his wife approached; as he turned he saw the flash and heard the bang.
A bullet hole was in his throat, he lay on the ground unable to breathe, his lungs filling up with his own blood. His wife looked down on him, the smoking pistol still in her hand.
"It will be over soon George. You left me no choice with that damn prenuptial you made me sign. I have to leave you but I could never leave the money. There needed to be something that happened to you where I wouldn’t be a suspect. I knew you would never let Dan get away with sleeping with me but for Christ’s sake I didn’t realise how hard it would be to have that fat pig’s hands claw all over me."
He watched as she went over and dragged Dan’s body from the car and placed the pistol in his dead hand. She picked up the shotgun and placed two spent cartridges in the barrels. This empty gun was then shoved in George’s unmoving hand.
It was her turn to smile. "Oh George I will be so sad. When the police come I will take the blame for you two killing each other. The tears will flow, my grief will be complete and I will scream that if only I didn’t have that stupid affair everything would have been okay. But don’t worry darling, I am sure all your lovely money will help me get over it." She patted him on the cheek as his eyes closed for the last time.
